Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Aug. 23rd, 2022 10:41 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
In the UK, we currently have industrial action and/or strikes by, amongst others, railway workers, dockyard workers, lawyers, rubbish colllectors and post office employees. So... everythings fine... absolutely fine... no problems here.... Sigh!
The James Webb telescope has produced yet more stunning images, this time of Jupiter. Can you IMAGINE the giggling that must be happening amongst astronomers all over the world as they see the results from their shiny new toy?
After being thought lost for decades, the original, full, pilot for Saban's Sailor Moon has been found. This video shows the dedication and detective work it took a VERY committed fan to track it down and show it. The pilot itself is a remarkable artefact with the 90's of 90's live action for the civilian identities and then an early CGI transformation and then 2D animation for the Sailor Scout scenes... though NOT the original Japanese animation, but newly shot in a different style. I will defend it for it's much more diverse casting, and the fact that Ami is a wheelchair user, in her civilian identity AND as Sailor Mercury.
The Sandman: Dreamcast is not what I expected, a series of short, guided meditation/mindfulness exercises narrated by Neil Gaiman and characters from the Dreaming to aid relaxation and sleep, Dream, Lucienne, Cain.and Abel (and Goldie) and Desire all show up, but thankfully, the Corinthian is not invited.
The actions of HBO in pulling dozens of series from streaming due to their merger with Discovery has raised a LOT of ire from creators, many of whom found out bout it via twitter along with everyone else. Many of the series were children's shows, like Sesame Street episodes and Infinity Train.

Date: 2022-08-23 10:44 am (UTC)*Realizes that my half-off promo ends this month and the service wasn’t worth 15/month when they were actually trying*
Yeah, I guess I’m canceling in September. Apparently, this season of Harley Quinn is shorter than the others so they’ve giving me a pretty great jumping-off point now that there’s almost no new content in sight.
I’ll probably do a trial to Discovery + or whatever exists when they finish season four of Doom Patrol. Honestly - with all this talk of them RAISING the price of the next streaming service (seriously fifteen bucks is already obscene. At least when Amazon does that, they also offer some other stuff too) – I might just buy the Blu-Ray.
I continue to have doubts that My Adventures with Superman will ever see the light of day.
Last minute edit: Right before posting I saw something saying they’re not moving forward with the Caped Crusader project either but I haven’t been able to verify that.
(Also, saw last week’s HQ episode and … vgf jvyq gung gur Wbxre zvtug or gur orfg znlbe Tbgunz rire unq. I want to watch a few things on HBO Max before they’re removed (some things on my watchlist are already gone) so it’ll probably be a month before I watch something I’ve been looking forward to for a while; Freevee just added a new show (Sprung) by the people that made Raising Hope and My Name is Earl.
I could probably wait a few years for the American Doctor Who license to change hands yet again but the first thing I completed on my newly diminished HBO watchlist was the “Flux” season (series 13). I appreciate the attempt at a season long miniseries but I think it kind of dragged in the middle even with the shortened season. Also, I’m not really someone who likes Doctor/Companion romances but it seems pretty cowardly to market a season on one and not bring it up until the holiday special. On the positive side I’m glad they addressed the closure of UNIT (though the previous “shortsighted government budget cutbacks” reason still sadly sounds plausible by real world standards).
I’ve also been watching more Adam Ruins Everything than is probably healthy for a person to binge. On its face, it seems like the kind of show that should be safe with Discovery but Zaslav is the guy that took the learning out of The Learning Chanel.
I did watch the She-Hulk pilot. The CGI looks less terrible here than it did in the previews. I was a bit disappointed that the entire episode – aside from the very beginning and end – was an origin flashback. Hopefully they’ll get to what I wanted to see (Jen practicing superhuman law) next episode and not waste another episode watching her life fall apart as a result of the courtroom fight. Wild speculation based on nothing; gur fcnprfuvc jnf gurer sbe Wra, abg Oehpr, naq fur’yy unir fbzr nyvra pyvragf yngre.
I have probably not seen today’s Only Murders in the Building. I’m typing this in advance and I rarely have time to watch the longer episodes before work. Honestly its late enough into the show that I’m fine with ditching theories and just letting it play out. I didn’t see last week’s reveal coming though I probably should have since they telegraphed it so hard a few episodes back. (BTW, apparently Steve Martin has said he’s retiring from acting after the show ends. I hope he has a long and happy retirement)
I feel like Marvel Unlimited has been kind of light on new content lately. I’m trying to remember if anything major happened three or four months ago. It’s been so long since I was reading monthly books that I can’t remember if spring is normally a slow period. Maybe it’s just the same paper shortages that keep pushing collected editions back.
Edit: And they just added 19 books Monday after weeks of barely having anything new. Yeah, I’m just going to assume a lot of things had been running late for whatever reason.
But I see they just added some late 90s no-nose era Wolverine so that’s nice. Realistically it gives me more time to read through the backlog. I’m almost finished with the last GotG series (that Nova spotlight issue was so good that I went back to reread it even though I’d already read the first dozen issues) and I was appreciating how well it addresses events like Empyre and the Hellfire Gaila without getting stuck in the middle of them; then the Last Annihilation same along. Don’t get me wrong, I was planning on reading SWORD eventually but the constant X-Men event tie-ins put me off. What’s the bare minimum of Post-HoX/PoX X-Men comics I can get away with reading in order to follow SWORD?
They do seem to have some interesting new Infinite Comics. I hope they continue with the Test Kitchen comic and focus a little more on the food and a little less on Tony Stark destroying people’s businesses before offering them jobs. I have no idea who Ziggy Pig is but I like Jacob Chabot; still, bold of Disney to introduce something that lots like a Porky knockoff in an era where WB’s IP is being neglected by their parent company…maybe we WILL get a Squadron Supreme movie. I still want more Jeff comics, though.
I know people in this community have strong opinions about Tom King’s work but last week I read his Supergirl run and loved it. Funzr nobhg Pbzrg ohg V qba’g rkcrpg gung gb fgvpx nal zber guna nyy gur gvzrf gurl’ir xvyyrq Wbuanguna Xrag naq Xelcgb.
I read Transformers Shattered Glass over the weekend. Some of the alignment flips work make more sense to me than others since there are heroes I just can’t see as villains (evil Bumblebee does not compute) and vice versa. My biggest problem with the Optimus Prime (er, “Pax”)/Megatron swap is that I can’t buy that they were ever friends because this Orion seems to have always been terrible. I do find it hilarious that this Starscream – who is still arrogant and a bit of a coward – is begging Megatron to assume leadership though. I’m obviously very disappointed that they didn’t use the David Willis version of Ravage but what they did with Soundwave was great.
I think I forgot to mention it in past weeks but I read Final Night for the first time earlier this month. I knew the broad strokes because, well, I’ve been reading comics for a long time but – in the context of the actual story – it feels like they were signaling that Lex would be the hero until Kyle visits Hal in the middle of the story. I thought it might have been another “Captain Atom is Monarch” thing where it got changed at the last minute but apparently it was a weekly event so there wouldn’t have been time.

As for the finale of Only Murders, my spoiler-free opinion is just "Wow."

Nope was quite a good movie. Still not at the level of Get Out in my book, but way better than Us. Of course I got and loved "that" reference. But I'm ashamed to not have noticided the obvious Evangelion influence.
She Hulk episode 1 was nice. Really enjoyed it, but after Ms Marvel, I'm becoming cautious of good first episodes. I get it that people miss the Hulk, but after what he did on Sakaar, I'd say he deserved to be "erased" from Bruce's psyche.

Date: 2022-08-23 11:55 am (UTC)There were some major changes and now the show isn't laughably out of date.
Spider-Woman's still around, but mostly they use her as an obvious stand-in for Pepper Pott's so mostly she just does business stuff.
They changed the Mandarin's voice actor, the new guys a real Asian person. Season one established that the Mandarin was a white guy who got turned into a green Fu Manchu, I worry about the implications of this, but I'll leave analyzing the racial politics of this to someone more qualified.
Looks like Young Justice season five probably isn't going to happen. I guess a cancelled show being renewed for more two seasons isn't bad. But now we'll never now how Vandal Savage would manage to win in the end.
I think I missed my chance to own Steven Universe season five on DVD (without buying a box set anyway). oh well. Incidentally owning things on DVD is great.
There was a recent government inquiry into disability employment services, where I live. Apparently 50% of them were found to failed to deliver meaningful support.I don't exactly have great memories of my time with the various services provides I've been to, but that's even worse than I was expected.
more game of thrones. I've been trying to ignore it, but a pop-up ad showed me Matt Smith in a Geralt wig.
Saw the trailer for Cobra Kai season five. I worry that it might suck.
Saw people calling Avatar The Last Airbender a cult-classic. I guess I'm a pedantic weirdo, because that annoys me. It's too popular to be a cult classic.

Date: 2022-08-23 10:05 pm (UTC)It really is a shame that dead shows like Futurama and Family Guy that were revived through increased physical media sales wouldn't have a chance today. I mean, Firefly got a movie despite the network royally screwing the show over; if recent events have taught me anything, its that the kind of executive that would air a show out of order in different timeslots will just erase it from the internet now.
Anyway, I hope anyone who wants to watch Steven Universe has. I can't see a show about gay rocks lasting long once the current CN owners notice it.
"cult-classic"
Words don't mean anything anymore.

-owning things on DVD is great-
Very true.
Though no doubt some executive somewhere is thinking up the idea of making it so once you've bought the DVD, you then have to pay every time you watch it.
Doesn't sound terribly pedantic.
Now, pedantry would be saying it's too recent to qualify for cult status.
It's not even two decades old yet.
And they're still making stuff about it.

Date: 2022-08-23 12:17 pm (UTC)The Flash Vol. 1: Lightning Strikes Twice. As an embittered Wally West fan, why did I start reading a series about a character I hate? I told myself that I was reading it for the villains. Then the villain for this arc turned out to be yet another evil speedster. I hold on to the vain hope that Barry gets called out some time.
Justice League Vol. 1: The Totality. I don't have the faintest idea what is going on. Something about the Still Force and the Invisible Spectrum. I did like the League roasting Batman and doing 'The Voice'. Even Wonder Woman got in on it.
Superman Vol. 2: The Unity Saga- The House of El. You mean to say the rad new villain actually got beaten?! I still don't care enough to check whether I get his name right.
There was also a weird moment where and alien mentioned missing out on a Bar Mitzvah. It might have been Myand'r, father of Starfire. Wasn't he dead? Who knows after all the reboots DC hasmgone through. What even is continuity any more?
Tales of the Batman: Gene Colan Vol. 1. This is more like it. Pre-Crisis Batman. I liked all the ongoing subplots. Poison Ivy mind-controlling the Wayne Industries executives. Mayoral shenanigans. One camdidate going for anti-Batman rhetoric, while the other is oicking on Jim Gordon. Dick Grayson has a creepy new girlfriend too. Also, I keep forgetting Pre-Crisis Jason Todd was a ginger.
Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Clone Wars Vol. 4. What attracted me most about this collection was the adaption of Revenge of the Sith. Serves me right for getting my hopes up. It cut out most of the good bits. No 'hello there' or any mention of Obi-Wan having the high ground. The comics were probably adapted from an early draft of the script, but still...
It didn't help that most of the other issues were about how awesome Quinlan Vos was and how he survived Order 66. Please tell me this is the last we see of him!
I did read some Marvel titles, but there wasn't anything notable to say about them.

Date: 2022-08-23 03:00 pm (UTC)I'm forever pissed they pulled the gun episode from subsequent airings. Cowards. Glad it was at least restored for the streaming.
Even though the series is so old, it still holds up extremely well, but there are a few things that are noticeably ancient. Like the fact that there is ONE music for pretty much every dramatic moment and action scene. These days it's like every character has their own theme.

A while back I was thinking that the "Xanatos Gambit" - which was a very cool aspect of the show - would probably come off as exhausting if I'd watched the show after all those Weisman Young Justice episodes where Lex, Savage, or whoever were pulling everyone's strings.

DC have finally announced they're actually releasing that Justice Society comic they kept saying they were going to!

Alright. Fine. Fine. If that's the price that's gotta be paid.
She-Hulk was fun.
And since that's all I really wanted from a She-Hulk show, yay!
Cineworld's looking like it's declaring bankruptcy, which given it's the nearest cinema in these parts is quite annoying.
All the other cinemas are difficult to get to or just plain crap.

Date: 2022-08-23 09:59 pm (UTC)But yes, I am lonely. I don't have any close friends that live near me that I could hang out with. Being with people is draining these days and the people I would like to maybe want to know better don't seem to want to be with me.
I'm tired of being on the outside always looking in. I'm tired of always having to be the one to reach out but never have it reciprocated. I'm tired of opening myself up only to have what I offer being used against me or worse, stolen and broken.
And I'm tired of being tired. :(
