Harvey, in a somber mood incongruent with Task Force Z, listened to Bruce's " There's a power vacuum in Gotham and someone new is stepping into it.
" But everywhere I turn, all I hear.. "
" .. you used to own this city. "
Out on the waters, on a boat heading towards Gotham City, there was a young man whose ancestors could make that claim in part.
Arzen Orgham of Svatrstal listened to a tale of a land deed granted in 1692 to an earlier Orgham, a deed that'd passed through " a long line of cousins and nephews and such. "
(There's no reason at all that there shouldn't have been a name preceding " Arkham ".)
" We can ill afford for them to see us as weak. "
(Making the Orghams' appearance on the Gotham scene a consequence of A-Day, grounding this story in the immediate past as well, is a nice way to ease the reader into the story's strongly distinct atmosphere.)
In Blackgate, Batman was paying a visit:
" I would say I heard you come in, but the doctors tell me my ears are failing with age. "
" Perhaps I felt your wings fling the rain at my window..
(Cardine the Maestro's a pre-existing character - from Batman #104 in 1962.)
Cardine took the music box.
(Unbeknownst to Batman, the smuggling operation in question'd been facilitated by an agent of the Orghams.)
(" Burroughs and Bowie " are " William S. " and " David " - they mentioned black noise in a conversation published in Rolling Stone in February 1974:
Burroughs: Turned up full blast [infrasound] can knock down walls for 30 miles. You can walk into the French patent office and buy the patent for 40p. The machine itself can be made very cheaply from things you could find in a junk yard.
Bowie: Like black noise. I wonder if there is a sound that can put things back together. There was a band experimenting with stuff like that; they reckon they could make a whole audience shake.
Burroughs: They have riot-control noise based on these soundwaves now. But you could have music with infrasound, you wouldn’t necessarily have to kill the audience.
Bowie: Just maim them.)
Batman swung off out of Arkham, Cardine's words in his ears - and buckled.
The tone of Barbatos, the tune of Batman's recent physical aches, sounded again through Batman.
Later in the night, the rain coming down, Harvey Dent was also on his knees:
Gael Tenclaw, that smuggling agent of the Orghams, blew the Azmer into Harvey.
" Ancient beings of wrath and rage that answer to my call.
" And they will watch your every action and I will know all that you know. I will see all that you see.
Gael and his two accomplices left, leaving Harvey with two.
