Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Oct. 4th, 2022 01:06 pmIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
It would feel wrong not to acknowledge the extraordinary courage and bravery being shown by protesters in Iran, following the death of a woman who was arrested by, and in the custody of, the "Morality Police" for allegedly not wearing her hijab correctly. The protests have involved women burning their hijab and cutting their hair, a significant act of rebellion in Iranian society. And it's not to ban those who wish to wear the hijab or other coverings, it's for the right to CHOOSE whether they do or not.
The UK's new Prime Minister, after a fairly diastrous first week had to reverse part of her key economic strategy (Cutting taxes for super-high earners) following massive outcry from pretty much everyone. Half her own party are angry at her for the cuts them because it looked dreadful in the middle of a cost of living crisis, and the other half oare made at her for reversing her decision, because it makes her look weak. You reap what you sow, I guess.
I hope those who Florida have come through Hurricane Ian as unscathed as possible.
Hasbro PulseCon happened over the weekend. Alongside new Indiana Jones figures (and your very own Staff of Ra headpiece), there were. Did we see a Cypher (or even a generic male New Mutants) Marvel Legends? No, but we saw a Marvel Legends of the fricking Orb!
"Power Rangers: Dino Fury" ended, and PulseCon confirmed the next season (the 30th) will keep the current cast, keep the dinosaur theme, but upgrade their costumes to US original outfits and use the Zord footage from KyuRanger (Which has bugger all to do with dinosaurs so that couuld be interesting) and head into space to fight Lord Zedd as "Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury". Also confirmed to show up are original MMPR's david Yost and Walter Emmanuel Jones as Billy and Zack.
Since I don't think I saw it get it's own thread, I'll drop the Wakanda Forever trailer here
“Tzom kal” to those observing Yom Kippur.
Following a recent question I saw on tumblr which posited that "Everyone’s starter anime is Death Note" (if one excludes DBZ and Sailor Moon since those watching would assume they were cartoons) which made me feel INCREDIBLY old (I mean... DEATH NOTE? O, my sweet summer child...) I want to ask: What was the first anime you remember watching?

First anime

Date: 2022-10-04 01:27 pm (UTC)Wait, UK politicians still reverse course on stupid positions when they realize they’re wildly unpopular with voters? How old fashioned!
I think my first anime was probably random old episodes of Speed Racer (or Voltron or something) before I knew what anime was. I didn’t REALLY get into it until it was popular enough that you no longer had to get bootlegs but niche enough that you had to drop a lot of money at a Suncoast to get the original Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy on VHS (I really wish I could find a Blu Ray or DVD with that “so bad its good” dub) because I was super into Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network.
I know nostalgia is dangerous* and easily weaponized but I really long for the days when I didn’t know the names of so many CEOs. It’s rarely for a good reason.

And so on.
I’m not actually bothered by the speed. I just think maybe they shouldn’t overpromise in spite of obvious realities.
Speaking of overpromising in spite of obvious realities …
Google is shutting down Stadia in January. Apparently, they’re issuing refunds for the hardware and software (assuming it was purchased from them). I was originally going to joke that the only surprising thing about it is that it didn’t happen sooner but I am actually genuinely pleasantly surprised that a company as big as Google would do the right thing an give people their money back.
(Though apparently the people who spent a lot of time and money to develop games for it were completely blindsided and that’s obviously terrible)
I mentioned Final Space was vanishing from the internet a while ago and I saw some people on Twitter last week furious that they can’t access their purchases from places like Amazon.
Yay, digital!
RE She-Hulk: I’m surprised Disney hasn’t made a bigger deal out of introducing The First Gay Couple In The MCU ™.
I’ve been catching up on Archer (another series that stopped being available physically several seasons ago). Know a lot of people disliked the coma seasons but I thought the shortened episode lengths gave them time to play in different genres without overstaying their welcome. Now that they’ve been back to something resembling the old status quo for a few seasons, I don’t think they have enough time, though. It feels like they get just enough time for something awful to happen to the core cast without really exploring what it means. It was nice … and occasionally horrifying to see how AJ takes after her parents and grandma, though.
(And the bank guard is a memorable one-shot character)
I’ve also been watching the “I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level” anime …which is certainly an Isekai light novel title. In terms of setup it reminds me over that even more slime-centered series with too long a name (That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime)*. This plot is largely advanced by the heroine’s accumulation of *cough* “sisters” (and daughters) with their own plot hooks. It sort of feels like the lesbian subtext just becomes text by the midpoint.
*Overworked Japanese person dies and wants to take their second life easy but they become insanely overpowerful and get sucked into other people’s stories.
Wayne Family Adventures is back. That’s neat.
Haven’t read much else this week other than the issue of She-Hulk (its great) and two issues of Amazing Spider-Man (they aren’t as bad as the other issues in this run but they’re still pretty terrible) that Marvel Unlimited added yesterday. Seriously, it’s hard to believe that the highlight in Amazing 900 is a two-page sequence of Peter returning library books.

Date: 2022-10-04 01:29 pm (UTC)I liked the Wakanda Forever trailer (but I admit the earlier teaser affected me more.) While I'd normally be okay with recasting...I get why they didn't in this case, and I have a whole theory about what this movie is.
(Man I hope they keep Namor unlikable.)
She Hulk has been good, but with 2 episodes left I kinda want them to get to the point. If Madisynn doesn't show up again I'd be happy; I live in the US where that type of character is all too common and it's tiresome.
Speaking of, sure Stingray did the right thing on Cobra Kai, but that still means he committed perjury and he better go to prison (Ans stop showing up in the show) It's a dangerous line of thought considering what his actor might do to people who disagree with him. People need to be reminded of that.
Hmm. I temember ad a yeen my older brother getting some Crying Freeman OVAs, and something I think was called Doomed Megalopolis, but I have few memories. But I remember a friend later showing me a VHS of episodes 3 and 4 of Ranma 1/2 which I found fun (I thought/still think Kuno was hilarious). I've watched a bit over the years.

Date: 2022-10-04 01:57 pm (UTC)Wait, She-Hulk only has two episodes? I mean, apparently the Daredevil rumors were just wishful thinking on the part of some fans and teasing from Marvel but I really expected to see Hulk again; I was thinking alien custody battle for the kid he just found out about off-screen. I don’t have a problem with her clapping back at a certain type of online weirdo but this version of the Intelligencia makes for a pretty terrible series villain. Heck, the real Intelligencia made for pretty terrible arc villains. At least the Titania reimagining was an interesting idea.

Date: 2022-10-04 01:32 pm (UTC)I say probably because I was like 3 yo, so I may not remember correctly. Candy Candy, Captain Harlock and Captain Future were also airing around the same period.
Oh, but watching as anime? I don't remember exactly when I became aware the stuff I watched my whole life were a japanese thing named "anime".
The first I purchased as "anime", though, was the first ever subtitled OAV available in my country: Legend of Lemnear by Satoshi "nipple master" Urushihara. And yes, boobs, ass, and more boobs in face of high schooler me. I was already used to fan service though, thanks to Ranma or Wingman, so what really blew up my mind was the incredible quality of art and animation: nothing in common with the TV series.
Er... DId anyone got a 403 DENIED when trying to browse Scans Daily recently?
It happened to me today during a couple hours. It was an account thing, not a IP thing, because I was able to browse the site with another device... until I logged in with that device too.
Still watching She Hulk against my better judgement. The latest episode started very poorly, but ultimately was not as bad as the previous one. Even made me smile. The D-listers were still played for the laughs, but at least they weren't turned into jerks this time.
At this point, I'm not even sure if I want to see poor Frog Man dragged into this. I hope they won't make him a creep or some trumpist

Date: 2022-10-04 01:43 pm (UTC)Surprisingly good.
There were one or two actors who may have been letting the side down a little here and there, but... well, it's Power Rangers.
I don't know if I'd go all the way up to great, but it's definitely been one of the better quality seasons overall.
Intrigued for Cosmic Fury.
Especially with them managing to get David Yost back. That must've taken some doing.
(At least I'm presuming they did a little more than a humble apology.)
Though making it ten episodes is very odd.
Entirely in keeping with Hasbro's whole thing, though.
Transformers news from Pulse Con included:
A Western Lio Convoy (I don't give a damn what the box calls him. He's Lio Convoy and always will be.)
A Tarn!
New Junkions!
And absolutely no new news about Rise of the Beasts! ... wait, hold up.
(After what happened with Batgirl, I'm going to remain worried about it until it's actually gotten a release.)
Meanwhile, the BBC has still not given a date for when Jodie Whittaker's last outing as the Doctor will be.
Just that it's some time in October.
Maybe they just want everyone to sweat with the fear that they might arbitrarily move the release date at any time.
(Being coy with the airdate is something they've been doing the whole time Chibnall's been in charge, and it's really irritating.)
Watched a little more of that Andor.
Three episodes is a heck of a slow beginning.
Got a relatively clean bill of health from the dentist. Yay!
First anime?
Excluding ones presumed to be cartoons? 'cuz that excludes Pokémon, Digimon and Cardcaptors then...
Um... think that'd probably be... um... Yu-Gi-Oh, maybe?
(Never seen any Death Note.)

I think since we've now had our first openly gay Ranger with Izzy, things have changed enough that he might feel more comfortable coming back.
Actually, I wonder if they might have Billy come out, maybe saying to Izzy like "It took me a LOT longer than you to be honest about myself. I mean, there was this time with an alien fish woman... Lovely girl, we're still friends, but that's all." THAT might be a nice way of saying "Sorry for treating you like crap".
I suspect the ten episode limit is because they don't have Nickelodeon money any more and are having to rely on Netflix... also they are going to have to pay for all new fight sequences with only the Zords being recycled sentai footage.

Date: 2022-10-04 02:09 pm (UTC)I have started to read X-Men from the beginning in the form of Marvel Masterworks. The early issues really were a slog. Stan and Jack weren't on their A game when they did X-Men. The only things that really stuck in my mind were the first appearance of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the Juggernaut. Even in the case of the Juggernaut issue, it was more a case of telling what is going on instead of showing us.
At the moment I have reached the period in-between Roy Thomas' two ru s on the title. I have mentioned many times about how I dislike Thomas' Avengers, but I do like his second run on the X-Men right before it got cancelled.
Talking about Roy Thomas, I have also read the Doctor Strange: Triumph and Torment Epic Collection. The trade begins with a couple of issues by Peter B. Gillis, tying up dangling plot threads from the Strange Tales series that Doc shared with Cloak and Dagger.
I did actually enjoy the Roy Thomas issues. It probably helped that they were co-written by his wide Dann. That being said, it did seem a bit weird to see Doc make with the funny. Then there was the obviously traced art by Butch Guise. It wasn't as bad as Greg Land, but it was quite distracting to see the female characyers reclining all over the place all sexy like.
I have also finished the Bendis Supermans and... they don't entirely suck. I like the character work the best, but the run falls down when it comes down to the original villains. Of course they are important enough for Luthor to empower them during the Year of the Villains tie-ins.
I have started to read the Bendis Young Justice series. Too soon to really say much about it, but I did appreciate seeing the boys all together again.
The Disney+ She-Hulk series is surprisingly accurate to the katest run of the comics. Six(?) episodes in and haddly anything has happened. At least Jen hasn't become the support of her own tv show, though. The latest She-Hulk series is more like 'Jack of Hearts. Also: She-Hulk Is There'.

Date: 2022-10-04 04:50 pm (UTC)RE Bendis Supermans: Yeah, I loved a lot the stuff dealing with Clark’s identity (I have read the scene in Perry’s office so many times) despite wanting to hate it but I just don’t care at all for the space stuff and the organized crime stuff only interested me because of the ties to the Daily Planet.
As an aside, on my last reading of the Truth arc I realized that Toyman had the same “forget it, I quit” reaction to a superhero getting unmasked as Stilt-Man but I think it works better in relation to Superman than it does with Daredevil.
RE Bendis Young Justice: It was great to see most of the original team back after years of abuse and/or neglect. I also don’t think this series gets enough credit for how much the expanded team feels like late in the original series when they had just about every teen hero.
(Hey, have you read Batman Universe? It wasn’t really what I expected from Bendis Batman but I enjoyed it all the same)
RE She-Hulk: I don’t agree that Jack has hijacked the comic but I do wish they did more with the superhero lawyer stuff. Jen hasn’t felt like Jen in a long time and events like Civil War 2 and Empyre sure haven’t helped. Personality-wise she feels like herself again but her legal expertise mostly seems to be used to help the Thing with parking tickets.

Date: 2022-10-04 03:19 pm (UTC)World: Russia annexes more Ukraine after scam referendums amids a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive. Revolution breaks out in Iran after a racially charged death of a young woman – because of a nearly total internet shutdown, we cannot be sure what is happening, but deaths are now in hundreds at least. War breaks out between (Russian-backed) Armenia and (Turkey-backed) Azerbaijan, Kyrgystan and Tajikistan, as well as between Iran and Iraq – the last one purely one-sided, with Iran commencing long range bombing of Iraqi towns. Catastrophic floods in Pakistan destroy a third of the country, leaving millions homeless and thousands dead. Nationalist party Fratelli d’Italia wins elections in Italy, with Giorgia Meloni becoming the country’s first female prime minister. It’s bad. It’s very, very bad.
Region: “Mysterious” explosions destroy Nord Stream 1 and 2, gas pipes transporting the fuel from Russia to Germany on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The gas should have stopped its escape by now. Two things worth noting: first, the explosions took place near the opening of the Baltic Pipe, transporting gas from Norway to Denmark and Poland, and here via existing network to Czechia and Slovakia. Two, NS2 was never in use and NS1 was closed by Russians in the summer. Human costs of the destruction are almost zero, but I worry for the environment, already damaged by the deadly algae bloom that killed Oder in the summer. The release of so much metane will also have catastrophic warming effect in the region.
Poland: Hoo boy hoo boy living here is like being repeatedly hit in the head with a baseball bat. Registry of pregnancies is now in force, with doctors obliged to register whether their patient is pregnant in a national database. There’s a project of changing the way the votes are being counted during elections (and I personally do not understand the details, but it’s very worrisome). Speaking of elections, the next local elections were postponed by half a year, a move that was theoretically possible but was never put into practice before. Finally, there’s a bill strengthening already very strong anti-blasphemy law, among other things preventing judges from dismissing the cases (as was the usual result before). If it passes, basically any criticism of religions of priests would be forbidden in Poland, and let’s not kid ourselves, it’s all about the catholic church, nobody will use it to fight the rampant antisemitism or islamophobia.
Myself: I am not too good, but I learned to smile and keep calm no matter how I feel inside. I’ve read the books related to the live action Winx series, and they are pretty good, actually, once you forget everything you knew about the animated series. The books are very introspective, with multiple POVs and looks into what characters are feeling and thinking, giving it overall a deeper feel than the series. I’ve also watched the new generation of My Little Pony cartoons. I have some issues with some plot points, but cannot make a definitive opinion until my questions are answered. Ponies are cute, though I prefer the 2D miniseries over the visibly low budget 3D series.
Comics: This month I’ve read Batman vs Robin, Nubia, Poison Ivy, Superman: Son of Kal-El, Legion of X, X-Men’92, Immortal X-Men and Jane Foster. I enjoyed all the series. I love all the main characters so much. I’ve also read the first issue of Tim’s new series, and the writing is so, so bizzarre, not in a good way. The art is fun but it makes Tim and his boyfriend look like cute girls and not young men. (I wouldn’t have minded it at all if writing was at least passable.) I’m especially grumpy about how the writer keeps giving the metaphorical middle finger to Tim/Steph shippers. Tim’s bisexuality was treated way, waaay better in Wayne Family Adventures.
Anime: When I was watching Sailor Moon circa 2000 I was aware it was a Japanese animation because local translation kept Japanese names and terms. Same with Magic Knight Rayearth, Dragon Ball and Slayers, all aired in the same block.

Dracula Daily has hit upon the Meat of the book - and its been a delight to watch peoples blind reaction to all that.
First anime? Hilariously was probably Super Book/ Flying House. It was a pair of shows made by a japanese studio but aired on the Christian Network. A pair of kids and a robot time travel through bible events. Its marginally better than expected.
Actual anime - I knew was anime - was Vision of Escaflowne - on grubby 4th gen fanfsub VHS tapes my sis had.

Date: 2022-10-04 04:29 pm (UTC)I just came back from Smile. Normally I like to wait a bit until my first impressions settle down because films I diss liked while watching I suddenly think “yeah, that was alright” and films I liked while watching sour upon further thought, but right off the bat I want to vent because I haven’t seen anyone else talk about it really. Maybe it’s because it hits a lot of deeply personal buttons of mine, but I was rather enjoying it until the ending, and that’s ticked me off something fierce. So that’s two movies this year that left me absolutely fuming.

I feel like I had an incomplete but classical education and never got into most of the more modern-ish stuff or more popular series.

Date: 2022-10-04 07:49 pm (UTC)I gave my mum the first volume of Sandman to read. In case it gets too much for her I put a bookmark in the last story, so she can skip straight to "The Sound of Her Wings".
I finally found Tintin: In the Land of The Soviets and returned it to the library. Now I can borrow things again. I got the first two volumes of Batman: Earth One.
The first volume was kind of meh.
So they updated Alfred by making him an ex-soldier and at one point he mentions how he tortured people in the Middle East. That's not as fun as killing Nazi's and saving people in World War Two.
Volume two was better. There were some nice moments, like Batman saying he doesn't let criminals fall off roofs during fights, because he doesn't want some kid growing up thinking that Batman killed their dad.
Also there was a nice scene of him shifting through a crashed train, dragging survivors from the wreckage.
Read Superman: Secret Origins. Not as good as Birthright, but better than Man of Steel.
I liked how we see Luthor has commodified hope in a pre-Superman Metropolis.
I now own two-thirds of Moral Orel on DVD. I could trade these rare DVD's for 5 cents each in a second hand shop, according to their website. Volume one has a cute Halloween sticker on it.
Community is getting it's movie, proving once and for all that it was too popular to be a cult classic.

Well, after my apartment complex has experienced two weeks of inconsistent water pressure thanks to a botched maintenance job, I find myself completely without water for the past hour or so.
Before they closed for the day the leasing office told us the water company was supposed to fix it tomorrow after they got the replacement part. Here’s hoping they started early.
Edit2:
And the water is back. Nothing like a day without a basic human need to remind you how fragile things are.
