Mirai Nikki Chapter 50
Jan. 10th, 2023 04:22 pmStory summary thus far with major spoilers under the cuts!
Future Diary was one of top ten manga/anime series of the late 00s. It also happens to be one one the worst stories I’ve read, making gems like Darling in the Franxx or Cross Ange look actually good in comparison. The story is one big battle royale for the title of god, as the old God is dying, so the best way to find a successor is to give random people magical cellphones and have them kill each other, right? RIGHT?? Main character, Yukiteru, is a major wimp protected for most of the story by Yuno, psychotically violent girl madly in love with him – even Harley Quinn at her worst doesn’t compare to that girl, I love her! While the main set up is decent if repetitive, the fights themselves are over the top absurd, like the one time Yuki and Yuno were avoiding a murderous five year old while their home was slowly filling with concrete. As the story goes the protagonists are first hunted by more ambitious competitors, and then start to actively hunt their competitors with no thoughts given to collateral damage, nor keeping their promisses not to betray each other. Because once they become gods (and Yuki never thinks about the notion that the rules state explicitly that only one contestant leaves the game alive) they can just undo these things, right? RIGHT???
Back to the present, some time ago the protagonists and friends were joined by one Akise, a boy who was apparently investigating the supernatural occurences in the city. After Yuki and Yuno kill an orphanage worth of children (!!!) to get to Kamado, a contestant who doesn’t want any part in the killing game at all, Akise helps Kamado escape, joined by three of Yuki’s friends. Chapter 50 starts with Yuki confronting his friends, who attempt to protect Kamado, and Hinata drops a major bomb: even a god cannot ressurect a soul that has passed on. Yuki, lost in grief over his parents, doesn’t believe her and kills her and two other friends with cold blood, crossing a point of no return (if you don’t count previous instance of killing orphans as a point of no return). Akise, who received a magical cellphone in a previous chapter, is his sole remaining oponent after Kamado fell to her death. Here’s how the scene goes.

They kinda don't quite manage to resolve the entire thing, but that bit was geneuinely surprising.
