Shang-Chi: Master of the Ten Rings #1

Zheng Zhu's loyalists plan on using a ritual to bring back Zhu from an earlier point in his life. Shang-Chi gets involved and as a result meets his father when he was much younger.

Marvel Comics has been trying to "make Shang-Chi" happen for awhile now and it just hasn't worked, and then the movie comes along and just completely kills it by changing everything up and giving him a new power set.

I'm rarely a fan of the comic world being altered to suit what's going on in the film world, but this was a case where I welcome the change.

Yeah I think this is a rare case of synergy working. Also given that the Mandarin and Shang-Chi's father are separate in the comics I think Yang did a pretty good job introducing another "ten rings" with their own origin and even adding some stuff to differentiate them from the movie's take (I.e. having them be a gateway to an eldritch abomination, possibly corrupting their wearer, etc).

Not to mention that the origins of the character are pretty problematic. Doubly so with his attachment to an even older, even more racist character.

So really: he needed to be overhauled.

I enjoyed this run of Shang-Chi.

I still wonder what happened to his ability to make duplicates of himself, though.

So, did anything come of all the other heroes giving Shang a hard time?
(Not complaining if it didn't. Just wondering.)


Shame it's over so soon. This was a pretty interesting run.
