I think that the series replacing the Initiative was announced a few months back. Avengers Academy by Gage and Mckone, don't quote me on that though.

Also apparently there are going to be a number of one shots at the end of Siege. No covers or solicits yet.

The worst part of the 00's was John Romita Jr's run on Amazing.

There, I said it.

I wouldn't rate it as the "worst," but even as someone who occasionally liked what JMS did on Amazing Spider-Man, JRjr's art really does not live up to the hype.

He was actually a MUCH better artist in the '80s, when his figures were slightly more cubist, but much more stylized and detailed, versions of what his dad drew, but Jesus, ever since he became King Of The Box People, he's been shit.

Not just the art too. His art is okay and all, but I'll NEVER understand why that run is worshipped around here.

Terrible villains, runs of Peter/MJ stuff that felt like Will and Grace fanfiction, Hell it even led into the atrocious Other arc.

Bear in mind, everything from "Sins Past" forward was pretty much Joe Quesada telling JMS, "Hey, remember when we said we wouldn't touch one word of what you wrote? Yeah? Well, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA."

That being said, it's a deeply uneven run at best, that shines more for the fact that a) it followed what is (now) the (second) worst run of Spider-Man in its entire published history, and b) it actually took some chances.

Now, granted, the second part was a profoundly mixed bag, because for every great story like Aunt May learning the secret, or every great idea like Peter becoming a teacher, you had just as many shit ones in the bargain, even before Quesada basically started wiping his ass with JMS's scripts - every single aspect of the Spider-Totem mythos, for example, was 100-percent terrible, from Ezekiel to Morlun, all of whom were Author's Pet characters to whom everyone else jobbed, and the one potentially decent aspect of that whole mess (ie. plugging Peter, the wisecracking superhero, into the mythos of Anansi, the trickster spider who was as much a cosmic anarchist as Coyote) was bungled in favor of a retread of I AM THE SPIDER GRAAAHHH.

That being said, for all its faults (and it had many), it remains vastly superior to what had come immediately before, and what came immediately after.

And the fucked-up thing is, even the current shit-tastic era of OMD/BND wouldn't necessarily be THAT bad, if it was done right.

What bugs me about the "better than OMD" thing is that it seems like it';s become the rallying cry for a lot of people I've read who praise it. Just because being hit in the dick with a sledgehammer is AWFUL that doesn't make a hit with a baseball bat a Christmas miracle either.

Again, I find BND annoying at this point, and even with my boredom of MJ/Peter, I know it was a terrible idea, but that run was not wine and roses simply because they were married.

I bought a volume of it on a whim because of all the love it got and it was frigging terrible. The totem shit, the terrible "Comdey" issues with MJ's Hollywood Hijinx that felt like a bad sitcom.

The villains sucked too. That weird dark woman thing that was bragging about doing Spider-Man? That led to his remarkable idiotic decison to ATTACK A WOMAN ON LIVE TELEVISION. I'm serious when I say that she could have stayed in human form and taken the punch and DESTROYED Pete's entire reputation. That was an insanely dumb move.

Dude, since when have you known ME to praise ANYTHING except on a purely CONDITIONAL basis? If anything, I share your nerdrage about how overrated certain parts of that run are - I HATED when everyone was all OMG EZEKIEL AND MORLUN ARE THE BEST NEW CHARACTERS EVAR, and Shathra (the Spider-Wasp) was a horribly executed, shitty shell of a character (example of JMS's internally inconsistent writing - when Shathra is introduced, we're told that she's beyond any vestige of human emotion, but at the end, she's begging Spider-Man for "MERCY," a concept that JMS had already established she does not even comprehend, much less possess).

It's because, even when we agree, we manage to do it LOUDLY.

"NO, FUCK YOU, I THINK YOUR OPINION IS VALID!"

"OH YEAH? WELL, YOU RAISE GOOD POINTS TOO, YOU FUCKHOLE!"

I think JMS run had some good points and some bad points. Just like Spider-man in general.

That said, I think it's pretty much impossible to write truly "Great" Spider-man stuff. (too many constraints) the best you can get is "good" stuff (which I'm happy to buy) and every run throws up SOME good stuff. (it's the ratio of "good" to "dreck" that is important)

I don't think Will and Grace is the show you're thinking about. Will and Grace was about a straight girl and a gay guy who were best friends, so no real romance going between them.
Maybe Mad About You? They were at least married in that.
