Remixed for additional content! Now in Technicolor!

Spiderman and Daredevil have long been a regular teamup, and they are one of my favorite pairings. Alas, there is little to prove my slash thesis. Rather, it is the weight of their history of interaction that hints at the relationship between these two. So I've collected all the appearances I have and spliced up selected bits into chapters.

Both characters were created by Stan Lee, and had a certain similar 'loner' feel to them. Stan's on record as personally identifying with Peter Parker, when he was young, money hungry, and a smart alec. One might read Peter's moping as emo Stan.

Despite the spiritual kinship, Daredevil is presented as an adult. While he has also been brought into the costumed world by the loss of a father figure, it is no longer his raison d'etre. Matt is a superhero because it is what he wants to be. In direct contrast, in the Marvel Universe, he is popular, where Spider-man is not. He is Peter's secret costumed friend, who understands him when nobody else does. Fanboys call it a 'older brother/little brother' relationship. :) In conclusion: brothers.

The first time in continuity these two met, blind man Matt Murdock is saved from muggers by a bombastic Spiderman. Spiderman feels an odd tingle when he's near the blind man, but dismisses it.

This slightly creepy panel shows Matt 'checking' Spidey out:

Their first official meeting was brought about by the Circus of Crime. Foggy Nelson, Matt's best friend, and Karen Page, their secretary and a romantic interest for both of them are going to the show. Matt's going through a 'woe is me! I can never have a girlfriend because she might die' period. Early DD was very romance comic-ish and choked with UST. Note the Steve Ditko art! Hard to believe Frank Miller would turn that girl into a junkie whore years later...

To drum up attendance the Ringmaster has advertised that Spiderman will be performing at the show, and suddenly, Matt decides there's a good reason to go out with Foggy and Karen!

Peter decides to go along with the show, famewhore that he is (it's supposed to be for charity after all). The rest is the beginning of a pattern--Ringmaster uses a visual oriented power to mind control Spidey and the audience that leaves Matt unaffected. A fight ensues, wherein Daredevil prevents Spiderman from committing wrongful acts and brings him back to his senses.

Then he vanishes from the scene, leaving Spiderman the spotlight to mop up.

It started with a joke and a handshake, and ends on a wistful note.

Spiderfan.org reviews this issue, Amazing Spiderman 16, in detail. Versions of this first meeting have shown up in Spider-man: Chapter One and Marvel Adventures but neither are more in-depth or interesting.

Stan brought Spiderman over to the Daredevil title for another round. Art is by John Romita Sr. and, supposedly, was also an audition for his later gig on Spider-Man.

This is Matt remembering the teamup.

The plot is...um.

The Masked Marauder (yes) wants to steal a special automobile engine (yes) so he decides to distract Spiderman by disguising his thugs in Daredevil costumes and having them attack the hero! Yes. Apparently, the rule about good guys always having to fight when they meet was well known or something.

Somewhat predictably, Spiderman falls for it and goes looking for Daredevil to take his frustrations out on. Spidey remarks on DD's new costume (it's red now)--because he notices things like that.

Throughout the fight, they are constantly thinking about each other and conflicted! Over! The fight! The tension! Two snippets:

Daredevil isn't interested in spider-bashing, so he exits. He bears no grudges. Instead he feels a connection with Spider-Man.

But others see the worst in the mishap, and they begin to doubt each other.

Spider-man goes trolling with his spider sense, and finds something that excites it...(yes, I know it makes sense in context. I don't care.)

It's a strange thing that Pete's spidey sense is 'different' for Daredevil, but it's not specific enough! Spider-man goes crashing into the room and picks a likely target. DD's not a woman, and he can't be a blind man, so he must be Foggy Nelson! Despite being 'softer' than Spidey imagined, Peter demands he come out! But Matt keeps mum because he knows 'in his heart' that Peter would never really harm him...

Eventually, Daredevil comes out to play. Where's all the bitterness coming from, Pete?

Of course, the Masked Marauder finally makes his denouement, conveniently making it clear HE is the bad guy. Spider-man's touchy behavior here was what made a lot of other heroes distrust him, but again, Daredevil backs off from a team-up Pete isn't ready for.

The Marauder uses an 'Opti-vision'..thing...to zap them. Of course, Matt's immune. Because he can't see, remember.

The Marauder gets away, Spider-man runs from the cops, Foggy is pretending to be Daredevil to impress Karen, and Matt...stares off into the twilight.

Spiderfan.org reviews Daredevil 16 and 17, too.

Daredevil was respected in the community at large and considered enough of an authority on Spider-man to make a judgement call when the Avengers were considering new members in Amazing Spider-man Annual 3. Despite Peter's prickly personality, Matty endorses him all the way. (And here's Johnny Romita doing DD again, after successfully being named Spider-Artist.)

It doesn't work out unfortunately. Peter doesn't trust the Avengers' judgement and they don't trust his. Which makes Daredevil's easy trust significant for a very long time.

Update: Original scans were from the first Essential Spider-man and Essential Daredevil in black and white. Previous links are now broken. Sorry guys! The Spider-man/Daredevil series will eventually be posted in it's entirety at [community profile] slash_scans, a community I have created. Due to [personal profile] jarodrussell's decision to delete the 30 gig online s_d backup that he's been hosting, I've been forcefully reminded the benefits of multiple redundant backups--especially ones that don't have an infamous name. Fortunately, his hard work enabled me to retrieve my posts in the first place, and for that, I thank him.

And here's Johnny Romita doing DD again, after successfully being named Spider-Artist.

One minor note: the Spider-Man Annual was pencilled by Don Heck, and inked by Romita.

I expect this thread to be locked soon considering the nature of the topic, but I will say this.

Threatening to delete years of content because you might get banned because of your own damn fault? Using an only copy as leverage to not get banned?

I remember when people pulled that shit. Back in grade school. God damn.

I've always loved Spidey+Daredevil and Spidey/Daredevil because of that history of trust and the way they're very similar in terms of M.O. and motivation, but have wildly different personalities. As much as I've enjoyed Spidey's recently deepened friendships with Torch and the rest of the FF, Luke Cage, Wolverine, and for a while Tony Stark, I miss the understanding Spidey and DD used to have. Now that so many major heroes know Spidey's identity and DD no longer does, their relationship just doesn't seem that deep anymore.

Spidey's spider-sense only goes off when he's in danger, right? Which means that at the circus, Matt Murdoch was planning on attacking the random stranger passing him by on the left. Or maybe he's always constantly fantasizing about beating up the people around him.

Great. Now I have Granger Danger stuck in my head. Again.

Except now I keep replacing "Hermione Granger" with "Peter Parker", and it's actually pretty disturbing how well that works.

I love how the Avengers summon Daredevil just to ask about Spider-man. Poor DD should have thought that they wanted him to join the team!

One of the times was after he was outed in the press, another one was when the New Avengers started up...not sure about the last (or first?).

I think the third time is in the late two hundreds on Avengers, in a four-issue arc that involved Nebula. John Byrne wrote it, and it has a weird sort of effect on Avengers continuity thereafter. It's why Spidey is in a bunch of "every Avenger ever" shots from that point forward, but he's never actually a member of the lineup.

Slashiness is slashy--"How can I trust anyone if I can't trust Daredevil?" Really? But I'm distracted by feeling bad for Foggy. Dangling civilians out windows=not a good strategy, Peter!

One difference between the characters is, for the most part, that Peter Parker is great at being Spider-Man, but not that great at being Peter Parker. Matt Murdock, however, is great at being Daredevil *and* being Matt Murdock.

That's not true all the time. Matt Murdock hasn't done any legal work in quite a while, and there's the whole "running the Hand." Peter Parker now has a great job and a great new girlfriend named Carlie. (Don't hit, I know most people don't like Carlie.)

True..but I think Matt can get and keep a decent job better than Peter will. Its the management skills (and the meta-characterization, of course, that says Peter has bad luck but Matt is ill-fated.)

Can't say I care about Carlie one way or another, though..She'll never be allowed to mean anything, so what does it matter?

Hard to believe Frank Miller would turn that girl into a junkie whore years later...

...and then changed her back in the same story line, to go with the theme of pulling yourself up from your lowest point.
