Well, considering how you *get* bear grease from the animal sort of bear, I'm thinking the living bears whose relatives you'd slaughtered and rendered for fat wouldn't get too friendly with you... vengeful maybe.

On the other hand, does anybody know when the other usage became prevalent, and if so what kind of 'grease' this is actually referring to... and why it goes on the *chest*?

A bit of googling revealed that it was used as hair gel. And to restore your hair's health.

I can't find anything to do with using it on the chest.

Original use by some Native Americans - spread on the chest as well as the hair to protect from the cold. Kind of like Tiger Balm or Vick's, but thicker and grosser, I guess.
