Asterix and the Normans

Hello, scans_daily.

I have noticed there is a severe dearth of Asterix in this comm, which is kind of a shame, consider how classic it is. So, in an attempt to rectify the situation, here are some pages from one of my favorite comics, Asterix and the Normans.



We meet the Normans, who do not know the meaning of fear:





Meanwhile, Asterix and Obelix have to deal with the chief's wimpy nephew, whose father sent him to the village to build character.



So, the Normans' cunning plan is set in motion...





And of, course, the obligatory fight scene:











Oh, Romans. You can't help but feel sorry for them.

So, how do our intrepid heroes teach the Normans the meaning of fear and save the day? The answer is quite simple:





Having learned the meaning of fear, the Normans are now unstoppable! OR ARE THEY?

The earliest Asterix books that René Goscinny wrote are all, pretty much without exception, great. Starting from The Great Divide I thought they were bad. Uderzo could draw with the best but he could not write. In my opinion anyway.

Some of them were downright embarrassing. "The Secret Weapon" in particular.

I "read" that one when I was too young to know how to read, and there was something that bothered me about it even then, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what. After that, the older I got the more it bothered me, and eventually I could very well say why. So it has the dubious honour of being the first stupid sexist work blatant enough to bug me.

I actually had a very similar experience with that story. I wasn't old enough to understand exactly what feminism meant, but even then I could tell that portraying women that way wasn't okay.

The classic comics have their problems with sexism, too, but it was never this blatant.

No, no, no. Asterix comics ended when Goscinny died. Anything after that is simply a mass hallucination. You'll never convince me otherwise.

Fulliautomatix - "They just recruited me too! I'm going to be even better than you are!"

Unhygenix - "You? You're never going to be better than me!"

Fulliautomatix - "Yes I am! It's not like Red Lantern energy can help make your smelly fish any fresher!

Unhygenix - "HOW DARE YOU!"

Fulliautomatix - "THIS IS HOW I DARE!" (Red Lantern energy blacksmith's hammer appears)

Unhygenix - (Red Lantern energy giant haddock appears)

Swiftly descends into chaos as entire village joins the fracas...

Atrocitus - (Approvingly) "I'm going to go charter a BUS!!"

Oh no no, Unhygenix can't use a haddock, it has to be a smelly fish. A really, really smelly fish.
