Sailor Moon! Only got into it recently (disregarding how one of my friends always made me play Sailor Mercury in sixth grade) but my inner child totally adores it. Teen girl superheroes and the power of friendship! So, I've been posting some of the manga on tumblr. I figured, why not here too? If anyone likes it, I'll keep posting. I have the full Sailor V Manga too, though I now have better pages than the ones I posted on tumblr, so I'll hold off on that.
The first arc of Sailor Moon has some differences from the anime (mainly, no filler) but they are fairly similar. However, the next 4 arcs are majorly different from the anime. Unfortunately, only most of the first arc has been scanlated properly (Sailor Moon was one of the earliest manga translations- as a result, it is pretty terrible, flipped around with the dubbed names and some really awful flubs- such as when the translators didn't recognize that a character was quoting a poem by William Blake. Sad.)
So! I figure I'll start at the beginning, anyway, Here's some pages from the first chapter.

Enter Usagi Tsukino! She is clumsy and a bit of a crybaby, but secretly an agent of love and justice- y'know the drill

Here is Mamoru, wearing a tuxedo in the middle of the day, which makes it TOTALLY NOT OBVIOUS WHO HE IS. He is casing out the joint to rob it, like any good citizen. Usagi hates his guts, which means she loves him.
Usagi finds herself getting stalked by a cat.

She sorta fails at life. But not at being a superhero. She proceeds to have an adorable video game dream sequence.

FORESHADOWING! She's just rescuing the wrong dude.

PRISM POWER MAAAAKE UP!
Usagi transforms. She has some nifty goggles here that apparently have mad seeing skills. They just sort of..stop being there after a while, though she does pull them out in the second arc to analyze some aliens. From where? Who knows. And her hairpeices amplify sound, again, rarely used.

Usagi doesn't know what the hell is going on and doesn't have a particular motive to be a superhero, but she is determined to help her friend anyway.

It's always very awkward when you realize you don't actually know your superhero name.

THE SPEECH IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Apparently she got all that just from Luna nodding at the moon.
Usagi gets fights a little, gets scraped up and realizes this isn't actually a dream as she'd thought previously. At which point she flips out.

I wish I had supersonic tears. My life would be easier!
Note the lack of rose-throwing. Tuxedo Kamen actually never throws a rose in the manga! He just sort of hangs around being a badass normal in the first arc, and gets a pretty decent magic attack in the second one.

Wonder Woman taught me that move!
Tuxedo Mask hits on her and bamfs away, and Usagi is like "HE IS HOT! ME LIKE!"

AND SO THE LEGEND IS BORN.
Next Chapter is Ami. Should I do her and Mars, or skip straight to Jupiterwho is my favorite. You guys can decide!

Date: 2010-12-07 03:30 am (UTC)They really, really, REEEEEALLY need to re-release Sailor Moon, both in Manga & Anime format (with Man!Zoicite, Non-cousin!Outers, and SAILOR STARS DARNIT).
And I'll say skip to Jupiter
because Mako-chan's totally my favorite Sailor too. <333no subject
Date: 2010-12-07 03:34 am (UTC)Mako-chan is and always will be the greatestI'd have to agree, it takes until then for Takeuchi to really hit her stride with the series and produce some good stuff. The initial couple of volumes were kinda on the awkward side. And I've always been fond of the "Usagi and Mina share the same brain" phase, that was always worth a laugh. And was totally in character for Mina.

Date: 2010-12-07 03:54 am (UTC)Making fun of the dub may be shooting fish in a barrel--but it's DAMN satisfying.
And I don't like the series that much myself--or, rather, I hate the Anime's rendition of the lead.
If I'm watching a series with a whiny protagonist, I'll go with Shinji Ikari.

Date: 2010-12-07 12:56 pm (UTC)My best story relating to Sailor Moon is when Cartoon Network finally started showing Sailor Moon S and Haruka and Michiru were introduced, complete with "We're just cousins! COUSINS. THAT'S ALL. REALLY." excuse.
A friend who knew I was into the series tracked me down a while later and asked "Hey... uh... are Neptune and Uranus gay in the original series, too?"
I nearly died laughing.

Date: 2010-12-07 05:26 am (UTC)My god, it IS Lightyears better than the Anime. Sailor Moon is...not even a third as annoying as I remember her anime counterpart being.

Date: 2010-12-07 08:13 pm (UTC)Seriously, it's not just the cousins thing. The personalities and interactions are totally different. It's not even the same show. The proper Japanese anime is awesome. Unfortunately it's not the one Americans saw.

Never got around to read the manga, though.

Date: 2010-12-07 11:26 am (UTC)Anyway, for some reason, while I loved the SM anime, every time I tried checking out the manga I always disliked what I saw. It's really weird, they are both basically the same story and characters, but the anime adaptation makes me happy whereas the original manga just annoys me.

Date: 2010-12-07 07:09 pm (UTC)Re: Whats in a Name
Date: 2010-12-07 07:44 pm (UTC)And she is not a bimbo. She's a superhero who saves the wold and in her off time? Goes to school, hangs out with her friends, has a boyfriend and future daughter. She doesn't focus on school a lot, but she passes class and has dreams of many future careers and is focused on keeping the planet safe above all else. There's nothing bimbo-ish in that behavior.
Fuck the word bimbo anyway. Fuck the slut-shaming, female hating attitude behind it. No name is a bimbo name, no girl is a bimbo. Don't use that to describe any girl, especially a character who has repeatedly demonstrated that they are a strong and good person.

Never got to the manga though, because once I attempted to, the series kinda went out of print.

Date: 2010-12-08 01:39 am (UTC)It was also one of my first exposures to feminism, believe it or not. It is made of Girl Power Awesome. I was intrigued by the notion that girls could be really feminine, enjoying flowers and ribbons and sparklies, and still kick ten kinds of ass. This was an entirely new concept to me at the time and I sort of ran with it. XD
