From the comments on recent posts about Chris Hastings' run on Deadpool, I suspect there are quite a few Dr. McNinja fans here at s_d. I haven't seen many Dr. McNinja posts, though, so I thought I'd help rectify that!
Dr. McNinja got picked up by Dark Horse recently, so now's as good a time as any to highlight the series' many joys. But rather than go blow by blow through the "best of" moments, I figured I'd give some love to my favorite character, Dark Smoke Puncher.
Sean is Dr. McNinja's kid brother, and his saga begins just after coming of age and choosing his new ninja name.

DSP starts out as a pretty standard jock-wannabe (albeit a robot-building, ninja jock-wannabe), and it isn't until several story arcs later that he gets real character development.
After Dr. McNinja dumps his young ward, Gordito (a gun-slinging, mustache-growing twelve-year-old who rides a raptor), with the McNinja parents, DSP is blatantly jealous. Dan McNinja first tells Gordito to give up his guns for true ninja weapons, but Gordito explains his tragic back story (an angry PETA member emptied the guns his father, a gun-slinging trapeze artist, used during performances, which ultimately led to his death).
He adds in a couple of his own embellishments as well.

Mitzi is terrifying but also kind of amazing.

D'awwww....DSP hugs are the best hugs <3. From then on, DSP pretty much steals the spotlight on those marvelous occasions that he appears.
He helps his big brother pilot a Draculabot from the moon back to earth.

He decides to become a technomage.

He makes a steampunk pirate's head explode through sheer geekiness.

He can hack into NASA's mission controls.

And through it all, he continues to build creepy robotic animals.

In an AU future where dinosaurs have taken over the world, DSP does indeed become a technomage. As a bonus, he loses an eye, so that's pretty much all I could want from the story.

But really, the best thing about him are still the hugs. There are never enough DSP hugs.
So yeah. In a cast of outlandish and colorful characters, all of whom I find likable, DSP still manages to stand out and remain the clear favorite. Dr. McNinja is a must-read for me even without him, but his presence certainly doesn't hurt matters XD.

Date: 2011-08-22 02:17 pm (UTC)I personally held out against reading Dr. McNinja for a long time, because I just don't "do" webcomics with continuity, but once I finally gave in, I was completely hooked. Probably my best "I gave into peer pressure" move :P.
