The origin of The Comet /// More Information

The Comet ran trough Pep Comics #17, but Jack Cole was only the writer as far as #5. Before Cole left he had John meet reporter Thelma Gordon, who remained his girlfriend till the end of his series. Shortly before he meets Thelma, he is hypnotized into stealing and killing a police officer becoming a fugitive. Thelma believes he is innocence and falls in love with him.

Rather than show how they met I though I would post the more interesting "Pencils of Doom." (I wish the was called the "The Murder Car" instead, but no had to be "Pencils of Doom.")

From Pep #5 by Jack Cole

Before we move on let's recall thi moment from Pep #1

For a while the two work together, but by #17 she is asking him to turn himself in so they can live normally.

THELMA GORDON, GIRL REPORTER
MILD-LOOKING JOHN DICKERING
THE DISINTEGRATING RAY THAT ONLY GLASS WILL STOP

The direness of it all!

Also "Nypponese". I bet somebody thought they were being very clever.

One need never be sorry for true outrageousness.

Two things I want to know:

1. If they shot the first reporter, why not shoot the second one?

2. If he's got a disintegration ray that he can only control with glass, why wouldn't he have disintegrated the thug's hands as well as his gun? That certainly would not have been a problem back in the Golden Age.

A: Thugs are invulnerable to disintegration rays!

B. Disintegration rays don't dissolve human skin, only guns.

C. It's COMICS.

I so love the 'aw shucks' look in Comet's face when he's telling Thelma he's not really a murderer; it's like he's trying to stiffle a chuckle, but you can see he's laughing inside.

Well, he didn't say that he wasn't a murderer, just not the murderer that people say he is. Perhaps a distinction without a difference, but definitely a start toward a career in politics or the media.

Considering the last issue we saw Comet really dialed back on the casual murder. I mean he actually captured the badguys this time, presumably to take them in for due process. Sure shows some evolution from before when his general business model was "disintegrate every badguy I see LIKE A BOSS."
