6 pages of the definitive moment of Walt Simonson's run on the Mighty Thor, the final stand of Skurge the Executioner.

Skurge, sick of being toyed with by Amora (she recently turned him into a tree so he wouldn't interrupt her and Heimdall), has teamed up with Thor, Balder and the Einherjar to journey into Hel itself to take back the souls Hela has stolen from Earth. After regaining the souls there now being pursued by the forces of Hel.

I will always say, Skurge went out well. He fell with his honor and dignity in the end. This was very well written and drawn. I hope they leave him alone. He deserved this in the end.

This NEVER gets old, and being as mythic as they come CAN never get old.

The build up is awesome; Skurge's tragically sad self assessment, Balder's acceptance without any sort of argument because he knows it's the best outcome.

But that last page... WOW! The notion that Skurge the Executioner, and Skurge alone, gains ETERNAL respect from Hela... it does indeed bring a manly tear to the eye.

And that last line even SOUNDS like it should be straight from a 12th century folk tale "... and that answer is enough"

I don't care how many times I read it, by the time I get to the panel where he's out of ammunition and still fighting like hell, I get the good kind of chills.

I know. It doesn't matter how many times I read this, the hair on my head always stands on end.

I'm not old enough to have seen this first hand, but this is seriously metal and EPIC. What it must have felt like to hold this in your hands. AWESOME.

This is a comic book death. This will always be top five in death scenes.

Chills man, chills.

Yeah, I don't even read Thor and this is one of my favorite bits from comics. I honestly think this should be the climax of, say, a second or third Thor film. Well, maybe not the climax (cause I suppose to some people the hero getting kncoked out while somebody else saves the day might not play well), but at the very least the 'last major battle before the climax'. If handled well, it would be the moment everyone remembers.

Fuckin' A, bubba. Did then, and even now I want to leap out of my seat and yell, "GO OUT HARD, MOTHERFUCKER!"

Which, if you're a priest, medical specialist in kidneystones or a midwife, might NOT be that adviseable.

There wasn't a single page in Thor God-Size that wasn't awesome.

*sniffs* I don't think I'll ever not tear up at these pages. Best Heroic Sacrifice of all time, in my opinion.

I remember this! It last came to mind when I saw D'Argo's last stand in Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars - I kinda thought that was a direct steal from this scene.

Just goes to show what I've said for years, Thor's at it's best when the book reads like Conan.

Ever read the What-If? where Thor and Conan meet?

It's made of awesome.

That sounds impossibly cool. Someone should post it.

That can be arranged....

Perhaps after the WEEK OF DOOM, a week devoted to the world's most savage barbarian is in order.

Crom on his throne! That would be a sight!

I wholeheartedly agree. By Crom and Mitra, let us set our course to an age undreamed of!

Shall the red-haired she-devil of Hyrkania ride by his side? Though their lips may not touch, it is Crom's own truth that wherever one draws steel, the other's blade should not be far away. Let it ever be so!

Ahh, Red Son-Ya! She-Devil of the Hyrkanian Steppes! She too will share in the plunder and the glory! Let it be known, one day their blades will meet. Then, if the Cimmerian has anything to say about it-so will their hips!

There shall also be other warriors, pirates of the Red Brotherhood, buxom wenches, city-bred fops, Zamorian sneak-thiefs, wizards (Bah! Wizards, may Crom's fell grandchildren devour their bones!) Stygian dogs, brave Kushites. The mysteries of the East and the glories of the West!

And of course, wine! By Crom, a man's throat gets dry!

Don't forget ale, and mead. Perhaps even an ancient form of uisge beathe, which we in modern times would call whiskey. Crom pity the man or woman who does not avail of the full variety of gladful drink the gods have given.

"Slams fists on table"

Yes! There shall be drink for all! And lotus! With buxom wenches for some and pretty dancing boys for others!

Tomorrow a Vanir may put you in your grave, so tonight it's wine and wenches!

By Gaea's breath, that sounds grand! I'd like a short girl, dark of hair, sapphire of eye, with the kind of roundness of figure that speaks of perhaps a bit too much fondness for food and drink, but assures she'll be soft and warm to hold through the cold night. In her soft eyes I'll find the traces of pain where the cruel words of others have scarred her, for being a bit too plump of form, a bit too dreamy of eye, a bit too sharp of mind to meet the harsh standards of narrow-minded "betters"... but it is they who I pass over, and her I alight on. Her I find perfect, for all the reasons the others find her wanting. With her I shall share my own pain at the hurtful judgement of others, and the lonely wistful wish to gods above and below that I might find one just such as her. Tonight, she and I shall share food and drink most fine, and stolen moments under the stars. Tomorrow, we all might meet Crom on his mountain, and be asked the riddle of steel.

Pteor's rod, I would like to slake my lust and and loneliness with a girl whose heart was as red as her hair. Buxom yet strong, who would stand toe-to-toe with me in battle, words and the bedchamber.

But this might not exist! I feel one of my gigantic melancholies upon me. Bah! what if the end be dust? I live, I fight and I strive.

I will go to Crom with the laughter of my death ringing off the walls of his keep. I will pile the heads of my enemies at his feet.

I read in the original run, and it is still my favourite sequence in comics ever. And still gives me shivers.
