The Penguin, is finally able to break away from the Joker after being blackmailed into assisting with his maniacal schemes.

Thinking he can get back to his usual business affairs. He is rather rudely awakened when he discovers that his second-in-command, Ignatius Ogilvy has used Oswald’s departure to take his money, his holdings, his operations, and even a variation of his name. Proclaiming himself the new boss of the criminal underworld of Gotham, Emperor Penguin. Oswald goes after his former second-in-command man at the Iceberg Lounge.

Oh, trying to take over for one of the big names, that *always* works well :)

Particularly given that the Penguin derived his name from his appearance, he took the name others mocked him with, played into it and made it a name to be reckoned with. His successor assuming the name "Emperor Penguin" is just a sad case trying too hard.

I'm just wondering why not even one of "Emperor Penguin"'s lieutenants didn't figure on the idea of shooting him in front of Cobblepot as a way of winning points from the guy.

Because as far as the lieutenant is concerned, Ogilvy has all the funds sewn up and he has all the power.

Or, if they were THAT smart, they probably wouldn't be working for a villain at all, they'd be doing it for themselves in a major corporation

There's just no way "Emperor Penguin" actually needs that monocle. I don't think Penguin actually needs one either, but at least Oswald can pull it off. This dude just looks like a poser. Tsk tsk.

I'm absolutely sure that Emperor Penguin considers it his... flair? Next he's going to get a fedora and go around insulting women in an attempt to sleep with them.

No bird wears a monocle. And if I saw one I'd probably run screaming.

That bit at the grave is hilarious to me.

They've got an issue where the cover is teasing a story about Robin's death, and yet there's less than 1.5 pages of Damian being mentioned in the actual issue, randomly inserted between 20 other pages of a Penguin story where everyone acts like it didn't even happen. It's pretty obvious what happened:

"Hey, Layman, Grant Morrison killed Damian. Can you change your issue to reflect that?"
"Oh, shit. Uhh, I mean, the issue's already written, it's the middle of this Penguin thing..."
"Doesn't have to be the whole issue. Just mention it somewhere in there."
"Really? Wouldn't his son dying be kind of a big deal to him, though?"
"Nah, just have a scene at a funeral or graveyard or something."
"I guess I can cut this splash page of Batman being awesome..."
"Yeah, yeah! One page should be enough. We'll change the cover."

That's basically how it is on every title. So stupid. Quite apart from entirely derailing any point Death of the Family had to it, it's just tasteless to use that kind of plot point without any real direction to it.

And within a page or two he no longer seems to care, either. It's just dropped in, then walked away from.

I was thinking I was entirely alone in liking the concept, really. I just don't think the name entirely matches the visual, somehow.

I do like the idea of Cobblepot being taken down a beg by his own arrogance -- clearly, he believed Ogilvy would NEVER have the guts to betray him, or he wouldn't have given him the access needed to do what he's done. And hey if this gets us a more interesting Penguin in the future (Gangster Penguin has gotten kinda stale), I'm all for it.

"Well, sir, actually, there is SOMETHING I can give you."
"What?"
"Someone to blame."
"Huh?"
"I let Damian go and advised him on how to get through the voice-activated locks."
"WHAT."
"Well, he really wanted to, sir."
"HE WAS TEN. YOU WHAT. NO SERIOUSLY, YOU"
"See? That got your mind off your grief, sir."

He's never been bald, regardless of the version, but this one's had hair since the reboot started, I think?

Since the reboot, who the heck knows anything, but in some versions of the Penguin he came from Gotham High Society, so there's that interesting link to Bruce there. :)

He looks pretty menacing in this. Takes savvy to make a penguin look dangerous! I think Burgess Meredith pulled it off in the TV show with aplomb. ;)

Currently, Snyder's historical take on Gotham has the Cobblepots as one of the most influential families of the city, on a par with the Waynes and the Elliotts.

His family seem to have been powerful, corrupt and unscruplulous for a looooooong time (Why they were never part of the Court of Owls I have no idea)

"(Why they were never part of the Court of Owls I have no idea)"

For all we know, they could have been. If it's anything like the Arkham-world's version of the Cobblepots, they could've only suffered a rather public fall from grace quite recently, leading them to be evicted from the group or something along those lines.

Perhaps they just didn't let Oswald in, because they didn't think he could limit himself to owl gags?

So Ogvily didnt have the money to simply buy the lawyers off, or they actual had a honour code for them to be killed off?

Date: 2013-03-12 02:47 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] donnblake
Could be a bit of both- the lawyers wanted more money to compromise their principles than Ogvily was willing to pay off- with the added bonus that he gets to send a message to any other potential Cobblepot Loyalists.
