notice the scratch on his face? if he had hit her first, she wouldn't have been able to scratch him... doesn't make the response of hitting her better... but judging from these panels alone... there is more to it than we see...
According to Spider-Man's supporting cast, yes. Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy might be the ONLY person out of the Spider-supporting cast who didn't have abusive parents. (And we still don't know anything about Gwen's mother.)
Okay, it's really just Mary Jane, Flash and Harry that had abusive parents. But that's still a lot.
I don't think J. Jonah Jameson was ever abusive to his son? I might be wrong, but I don't recall him ever doing or saying anything negative about John.
That's pretty much the original supporting cast. You can add J Jonah Jameson, too, since his foster father abused him. We don't know about Aunt May, though. If we go with the original timeline, her father could be abusive because he's suffering from PTSD after the Civil War. The real one, I mean.
This is a little dated. But for late 2001/early 2002. Back then, legal dramas would do episodes where the characters try to defend an Arab/Persian person, but they are stymied by classified information. The Practice, Judging Amy and Family Law are examples. (Most police dramas would involve the FBI wanting to take over a case.)
Well, I'm kind of interested in the rest of the story line, but really, was adding in another abused mother really necessary? I mean, it sucks all the way around, because presumably it's meant to fill in as backstory for HER, as well as giving yet another hero "daddy was abusive" angst (as if "dad died when I was young" wasn't traumatic enough)
So? If that's meant to be a comment indicating that the US is so terrorism-obsessed that we'd consider graffiti to be an act of terrorism, then as cynical as that opinion may be, it simply isn't true. His mother isn't a terrorist, that's all I was saying.
I have a theory, that it's a demon, a dancing demon, no something isn't right there...
Okay no, seriously though... i think there might be something more to it than we are seeing.
This analysis comes out of these panels alone, not knowing much of anythign about Daredevil and his family...
There is a scratch on his face. He must have hit her after she scratched him. See the knocked over food and chair? someone knocked those over, it could have happened with her being thrown back, or maybe someone threw them...
look at the way he is holding Matt. Hand supporrting his chest, other hand supporting the bottom. It seems like he's being really protective.
what i am thinking is that maybe she tried to hurt Matt? or they got into a fight and Matt was almost injured?
or his dad was an abusive jackass...
i think they might be going for the misdirect though... though what they would gain from tarnishing either of thier reputations is beyond me...
yeah, i mean i think part of the point of Original Sin is that the heroes are only getting part of the picture... Hulk and Iron man apparently get entire play acts... but others, Thor, Murdock, are getting images, and snippets...
yeah that's what i think, maybe even unknowingly. a woman almost hurting her child after suffering from PPP AND catholic to boot, at that time, might have run away to a nunnery...
She first showed up in Born Again when Daredevil was destitute and borderline insane, she nursed him back to health. The backstory was that she had seemingly just flaked out on Jack and Baby Matt, walking out one day to become a nun, which is frankly speaks to a more interesting and flawed character as far as I'm concerned.
Maggie doesn't show up often, so it is a big deal when she does. Maggie also showed up DD #325 and #380. She was also in that #346-#350 story where Foggy finds out Matt is Daredevil and is furious.
There's not much that can be said about this without sounding a little gross, so I'll just say that if this being played straight then it's a pretty trite reveal to be honest. I have to expect that this is a fake out though, because I really do think Mark Waid is too good a writer to be so cliche.
i agree. i think it's a misdirect. i think we are MEANT to think this is what happened when, even if you look closely at the scene, it can be read many ways.
I think so, in fact: after all, there's a difference between seeing all of this in context - the way Uatu originally did - and getting sparse, simple flashes the way Matt or Thor did.
Knowing Waid, he is going to surprise us with something, unless editorial fiat causes everybody to act (again) like a bunch of fools. Given the way some of the individual stories are developing, I'd say there's a little hope left.
True. If this is commentary on what happened to those nuns a few years back, or our anti terrorist policies in general, it falls short in so many ways, sigh...
The only thing dumber I've seen was when Bucky was deported back to Russia for murders he was supposed to have committed as the winter soldier.
I mean, yeah it's comics but you can only stretch the internal logic/symbolism so far before it breaks.
Am I the only one that remembers that this isn't the first time Jack was supposed to have been abusive? Frank Miller retconned Jack into being an abusive drunk who beat Matt all the way back in his run, its just never really been brought up because its not usually relevant, and as noted, 'dead dad' is angsty enough.
