Fun part about the translator being mentionned here, that's something I've been discussing about with my wife a couple days ago. When we were kids and saw the first movie (A New Hope is the first movie. Episode I, II and III never existed), we saw Han talking with Chewie and Greedo, we saw Luke talking with R2, each with their own language. We didn't wonder why they would understand each other. We just accepted that they did. It's only recently that I've been wondering if there was miniature translators inplanted in the ears. Of course, with so many languages in the galaxy, one would still need 3P0 translators because the implants could only do a limited number of them. But I suppose the subject's been covered already in one of the billion stories from the extended universe.
It's referenced in passing in the Rebels cartoon, where Ezra is learning to understand the squawk-talk of Chopper, the astromech droid, whereas other members of the crew have never got the hang of it.
Perhaps we're only hearing the sounds our ears can pick up.
"Chewbacca" is his full name, which we can say phonetically, but not in the right frequencies, but Wookies are forgiving enough to let us get away with our dreadful pronunciation.
Fun fact: The very first Star Wars translations from English to French in the 70s changed Chewbacca's name into Chique-Tabac, which means "Chewing Tobacco."
