This book is still weirdly a Hell of a lot better and more fun than it has any right to be, given the characters the lead is clearly a derivative of. Definitely good stuff.
Eh, Deadpool's last couple of runs have been some of the best books Marvel's been putting out in a while. So being derivative on that side isn't really an indication of poor quality.
I meam... technically he is not wrong. I like Gwen, but he is pretty much right. But are we supposed to think that, or is he supposed to come across as a stupid bully?
Or worse, like "oh noes, out heroine is in such bad shape even oathetic Batroc is lecturing her!"?
Well, to me at least, he did come off a bit like a bully but not stupid at all.
He is literally the only person, who noticed Gwen's lack of abilities (demonstrated them too), and arrived just the right time to prove her fears right: As in it's slowly sinking in Gwen's head that the world is real enough and she misses the relevant survival skills (and this gets people she cares for killed).
With this setup I'm currently rooting for Batroc becoming her mentor. (Could happen... depends entirely on what will Gwen do to solve the issue ending cliffhanger)
Out-of-universe Gwenpool is the result of a "Gwen Stacy as ALL the superheroes!" variant cover gimmick.
In-universe Gwenpool has nothing to do with Gwen Stacy. - Gwen Poole fell from an AU where Marvel comics are fiction, so the first thing she did was getting a superhero identity and costume (to not be an "extra") but the tailor misread her name (Deadpool is franchising (see Mercs for Money) so it was a honest mistake) she ended up becoming Gwenpool.
