NS: Shazam - Fury of the Gods discussion

I just came back from seeing this and had a good time. If you liked the first one it’s the same kind of film, a (mostly) self-contained superhero romp intended for younger audiences. There are lots of funny moments but they come off as genuine as opposed to cynical or self-deprecating and it knows when to keep things dramatic. It’s not perfect but I enjoyed it more than Black Adam, Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder or Quantumania. 

Given that this is flopping (my theater was mostly empty) and the DCEU is headed for a reset it seems unlikely that we’ll get a third film which is a real bummer to me as I would like at least one more film with these characters.

Oh this reminds me, since no-one's posted the comics lately: now that the Wizard has killed Zeus and helped install Hera on the throne...shouldn't he change his name to Shaham???

I haven't watched it yet (too tired and stressed to drive to a theater), but I'm pleasantly surprised at the positive reception it's getting. I could have sworn I read somewhere that test audiences absolutely hated it

I know people hated Black Adam but I think it’s a shame we’ll probably never see Asher Angel/Zachary Levi square off against The Rock. That’s probably, like, the one time I’d be okay with “they're the hero but dark and/or eeeeeevil” (outside of Zod anyway).

What are the odds that The Rock would be okay with his character losing a fight with a kid, though? I got the impression he was WAY committed to getting Henry Cavill's Superman back into the DCEU so Black Adam could win that fight in a sequel...

I’d say decent enough. He’s definitely no stranger to kids’ media or playing the foil.

I liked it. Not as fresh as the first but some fun stuff, MIrren was terrific and having Liu's character end up being the villain was a nice touch. Plays on the ideas of kids growing up and still some great action with Levi selling the whole thing well.

Just a shame if we never get a payoff to the Savinna/Mr. Mind partnership but overall pretty fun.

Also props for the great bit of MIchael Gray from the 1970s TV show popping up (complete in red shirt) to call Billy "Captain Marvel."
