Sure, we joke, but while it's easy to believe Johnny could be bi or pan if Marvel ever let him really embrace that side of himself... (and trust me, he'd be SUCH the gay icon... if he isn't already. I can just imagine the young queer people going "I had that poster of Johnny Storm on my wall even before I realized I was gay/bi/pan/trans...")
616-Peter Parker would take a hell of a lot of work to convince me that he was anything but hetero. That's just the way the character has been so thoroughly depicted for his entire existence. You gotta go to alternate timelines to find a queer Peter. And even then... have there been any? I'm not talking gay Spider-people, but actual alts of Peter Parker (who aren't gender-swapped clones, thank you Ultimate Jessica Drew). No, one of Peter Parker's core traits -is- that he has that soap operatic relationship angle with women.
(Could you make an argument for either being heavily in denial/closeted all throughout the years? Or just not having met the right person? Could he fall for a trans woman, or a guy, or an enby? Sure, anything is -possible- but there'd be so much heavy lifting to justify it, it's easier these days to introduce -new- characters from the ground up.)
It makes for interesting thought points about which characters have the appropriate subtext built in throughout their history, and which don't have the same kind of narrative opportunities. Which are worth it to try and change after years or decades (Iceman, Alan Scott), and which resist that sort of change because they're essentially fossilized in their best known incarnations (Superman, Daredevil...)
But as usual, I spend too much time thinking about this sort of thing and how I'd make it work if I could.
Yeah, Peter's a straight sis ally who either doesn't mind or is obvious to the fact that a lot of people in-universe mistake him for gay.
(There's probably an argument to be made about the gender and sexuality of Ultimate Peter but I don't think I'm the one to make it. Ultimate Jessica sure seemed more comfortable with herself than Ultimate Peter did, though)
Johnny is totally in love with Peter and that's the tragedy.
(Marvel barely acknowledges that Hercules is bi so there's no way they're confirming it with the Human Torch despite decades of subtext)
And to be fair, it hasn't been that many years since writers had Hercules making macho "no homo" style quips at antagonists. As recently as that first post-coming out Iceman series they had him accompany Bobby to a gay bar as a friendly show of support rather than showing an interest in the evening out for its own sake.
Founded by girl geeks and members of the slash fandom, scans_daily strives to provide an atmosphere which is LGBTQ-friendly, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harassment free.
Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
