These moments always strike me as false in comics.

There are lines and crossing them have sever consequences. I trust Priest but it seems like Lex's days of just walk around after a stunt like this would be over.

Its one of the reasons I like Kingpin. Kingpin doesn't act like her knows he has contractual immortality. He acts like he actuals have reason consequences....and most of the time they do.

This is DC's weakness, I think: the villains are so iconic that the fact that they will never suffer any consequences suffuses the narrative.

As a result, Lex, Joker, and Darkseid can commit any atrocity and everyone, from writer to reader, knows they'll get away with it.

But it is particularly egregious with Lex, because he has a legitimate business front to put up.

Don't think it can all be blamed on iconography alone.

With the Joker, just for example, it's because nearly every writer wants to tell the next Killing Joke (at least in the sense of being a story that is considered big and memorable and constantly referenced for decades to come).

Or in the case of those like Deathstroke, it's because they think he's just, like, too cool to get rid of.

In retrospect, " Corporate Lex gets away with everything forever because he has money and position " was also simplistic.

But there IS a cure for cancer in this world. "Eruc s'sioL recnac" and it's done. Maybe a bit of the Amazionian purple ray?

You're bringing up two concepts that are outside the immediate scope of a Superman-centric story (even one set in a wider DCU), and you're talking about them like they have some kind of innate potency that would irrevocably steer the course of the intended story.

It is reminiscent of the entirety of the Marvel universe being unable to heal a bullet wound when Aunt May was shot.

There’s a bit of a difference between that and this. To my knowledge Zatanna doesn’t show up in this miniseries and there’s a big asterisk on if she’s even capable of that sort of thing. Aunt May getting shot dragged in a lot of non-Spider family characters, and it stretched believability that somehow nobody - freaking *nobody* - was able to patch up May’s injuries when all of them had healed and/or been healed from much worse in the past.

No, it wouldn't. The writer (and editorial et al.) steer the course of the story - a person, people, do. A point of lore/continuity, extrapolation or recorded datum, does not - it is trivia. It is only a thing that affects the story being told if a person thinks it should.

If no one does, it won't. If that point doesn't have an effect, nothing or no one is failed - other than those who give that trivia, or their own knowledge of it, especial importance.

You know, I never met my paternal grandfather. He passed away some time before I was born. I've only ever heard second-hand stories about him from my father.

He passed away due to pancreatic cancer. I only have a few photos and the words of others to have any impression of the man by. I never got to have any chance of making memories of him.

And there are others in this world who will never know family because of a similar situation.

So, to see pancreatic cancer weaponized like this? As some plot in the fight between Lex and Superman?

I will say this. It has reinforced why I do not care for C.P as a writer, as his stuff leaves me cold, whatever his metaphorical pen touches, and this...well, is a very good example of why.

This is out of character for Luthor, who has never been a "bwa-ha-ha I'm EVIL!" kind of guy.

...what? What about the time he cured his sister when Superboy dared him to, but the cure only lasted about a minute? He then stated that he wouldn't completely cure his own sister until Superman was dead.
