The closing Wham Line also evokes Tod Browning’s Freaks—although that was a very different story; the titular freaks were its heroes, and the sideshow community their safe space. They initially spoke the famous line “Gooble, gobble, one of us!” as a statement of loving acceptance into their circle.

Except that the outsider about to marry one of their number held the freaks in barely-concealed contempt, and had only exploitation and murder in mind; her fate stands as a classic cautionary tale of Fuck Around And Find Out —“one of us” indeed!

That face paint reminded me of Face (the cenobite, not some other Face). So much so that I was expecting a puzzle box somewhere in the story.
