Controversial take:
Kitty is not now, nor will she ever be, one of nature's ponytail people.
And not even all the skills of Alan Davis could change this.

(giving her her girlfriend's magic sword and armour. In case her being a super-genius who everyone loves wasn't enough.

At least it wasn't the focused totality of her nagickal power. Betsy might have had something about that, but the X-Men were still pretending to be dead. For reasons.

(Something-something proactively striking against their enemies when in reality they were hanging around in Australia as the subplots piled up around them).

Yeah the "Let's pretend we're dead" schtick might have worked a little better if it didn't mean that they basically abandoned the New Mutants to whoever chose to attack the mansion first.

Good thing nothing bad or traumatic happened to any of the New Mutants whilst they were playing dead, isn't it? ISN'T IT!!!!

It's almost as if the X-Men can only care about one plucky kid at a time.

Didn't the whole faking their death thing also have a major part in Maddie going all Goblyn as well?

Can't imagine where the X-Men got the idea this was a good decision fro-... Ah.

Yeah, Maddie went with them to Austalia, got close to Havok, and then got seduced by a demon in Limbo because she was basically bored... not by Havok.... (Well, probably not by Havok, after all who am I to judge?)

I have a long held theory about how the "Maddie goes evil" subplot was always supposed to kickstarted by Sinister, but then got hijacked by the need to have a tie in to Inferno (Because God forbid a New Mutant like Illyana should be the focus of a crossover event), so Claremont invented Nastir'h to give them an "in" to the whole thing.

Not sure inheriting the Soulsword is exactly a gift, since it's usually a corrupting influence.

At least Alan Davis remembers that Illyana had always wielded it left handed. I don't know why that always stuck with me but, like getting Longshot and Spiral's finger-count wrong, anyone using the Soulsword right-handedly just sets my teeth on edge.

That's an interesting point, the Soulsword slices through magic and spells, so it breaks the Inferno enchantment on Brian, but Captain Britain is sort of magically powered too, albeit in the "Super science so far in advance of anything it might as well be magic" sort of a way, so it might have been impacted too

Yeah, gotta rub our noses in it with the poor dead Doug cameo in Kitty's nightmare world.

And the skull being a hark back to "just happened in real time" death of Jason Todd is a macabre little touch.

Love seeing all these 80es Mutant titles. I'd forgotten that there was an inferno moment with a parody of Freddy Krueger. So ironic for me, as I always thought if there was any actress that could have made a pitch perfect Kitty Pryde back in the day, it would have been Heather Langenkamp, circa the first Nightmare on Elm Street!
