I heard Claremont wanted to get Iceman in there so the original X-Men involved in the finale but somehow couldn't make it work.

That would have been great to have them all together. It’s weird he couldn’t find a way to do it, as it’s not like Iceman was doing much. Maybe it was too late by the time he found out how significant issue 137 would be for Jean.

This was published in May 1980, so safe to say he was catching the midnight premier of Empire Strikes Back.

BOBBY: Can you even imagine what that would feel like, Scott, finding out that this big space guy is really your father?

BOBBY: (after watching what Anakin becomes in Revenge of the Sith)Yeah, maybe I should stop talking to Scott about these movies.

BOBBY: It had an ICE PLANET, you guys. A planet made of ICE. You get what I'm talking about, right? Hank, remember when the first one came out and there was a big hairy guy in it? You were so excited!

HANK: Look, unless you can work out how to dye an entire body's worth of hair brown in time for Noreascon Two, that particular obsession stays STRICTLY between us.

BOBBY: Can you even imagine what that would feel like, Scott, having an evil nephew?

SCOTT: Actually, I can't! I have like 1.2 evil brothers, my son's evil clone, and two evil grandsons, but absolutely no evil nephews.

BOBBY: 1.2?

SCOTT: Alex is only occasionally evil.

BOBBY: Wait. Who's your other evil grandson?

SCOTT: Hyperstorm. Apparently he was Rachel and Franklin's evil kid and Galactus ate him.

BOBBY: Weird.

SCOTT: Yep. But hey, it's one less birthday card to send every year.

Yeah, according to a chronology project, Bobby basically dropped off the radar after Champions #17, had a couple of guest-appearances in Spectacular Spider-Man and a Hulk annual (both with Angel in tow as they kinda wrapped up Champions stuff), and then turned up for Jean's funeral in 138.
So he wasn't exactly burdened with an overflowing social calendar at the time.

Oh, wow. I never realized it before, but you're right. Bobby's the only one of the originals who completely missed this seminal moment for Jean.

That's got to stay with a guy.

It's almost as if it at some point, when they were teenagers, Jean did something to Bobby, something which profoundly altered his entire life, but was done in such an asinine and insensitive way as to foster resentment towards her... so when Jean's in trouble, Bobby's reaction is a heartfelt "meh".

But that'd be nuts.

Scott almost on the verge of talking Jeanix down, only to be interrupted by Chuck zapping her from behind.
Such a classic Professor X move.

You had one job, Wolverine. One job! Stabbing people is what you're there for!
The one time anyone needs you to actually do it, and you chicken out.

Torn between wanting to taunt John Grey for the roboticism of calling Jean "daughter" and not, because a few pages prior he'd been melodramatically yelling that Phoenix was no daughter of his (well, in fairness...)
Because, you know, one thing to say it and another thing to see her in trouble.

Incidentally, kind of a running theme of crummy to just plain awful dads in Claremont's work.
Professor X, Corsair, Professor X, John Grey, Carmen Pryde, Reverend Craig, Joe MacTaggert, Old Man DaCosta, Joe Danvers, Professor X again...
"There's some kind of pattern here."

(Also, nice little touch where Jeanix blasts through the sound effect.)
