That story'd killed off old Bruce Wayne and set Terry McGinnis to wage his own battle against the killer, Gotham City - its systems come to life as the AI " Living Gotham " - over a year.
He and allies had won that fight. The sequel's after that - without the temporal element (which was only " progression of time " detail), but with a threat of similar scope.
Neo-Gothic #1 opens teasing it in Gotham's depths, where children paid a cat money to be admitted into a garden green and fruiting.
There was narration - the narrator not on the page and not yet named.

Higher up, Terry was being Batman with the help of some of his Neo-Year allies - the three-in-one hackers Gestalt (support in the Batcave) and the now-former-GCPD Beam Boonma (spearheading an effort to create a " citywide crime-fighting collective ").
" Terry, are you trying to talk to me while you fight super-villains again? "
" Beam, when I'm working..

(Panels of Inque and Shriek, acknowledgment that Terry does have his own pre-existing distinct villains.
Also, some " Professor Pyg " derivatives. They're probably " Pyggies " or something like it.)
Terry went back to his apartment, where he took a call: " Hi, Mom. "

(In the Batman: Urban Legends #7 story that kicked off Neo-Year, Terry pushed the people in his life out of Gotham to protect them from the Living Gotham.)

(Terry and Beam's relationship developed after Neo-Year #6's ending.)
Later, Gestalt called Terry's attention to a problem.

Beam'd found Donovan Lumos, the glowing tech-jerk whose ego'd made him a perfect puppet for the Living Gotham - who was back to posturing after all that.

" .. in the Gotham Deep. "
Down Terry went, in search of answers.
He found that cat, from the beginning - he saw the possibility of answers.
The cat saw through Terry's adequately shabby disguise, catching him out as " a tourist from the Topside ". Terry made only a little way in getting answers out of him - the cat shortly rebuffed him and left.
Batman next came to the cat.

(People in Metropolis swear by " Kal ", and cats in Gotham swear by " Selina ".)

Downward went Batman and Kyle.

Batman handled Blunt and co.

Kyle led Terry to a hole that'd take them another level below Gotham.

(This is the same still-unidentified narrator from the beginning, who gave " Lesson the first " there and " Lesson the second " afterwards.)
' If you ever forget lesson the second? '

(The second layer under Gotham is Old Gotham's sewer system.)

(Killer Croc, forgotten in the deep, growing bigger and meaner like a sewer alligators story.
Pagecount's just under 10 of 30 from July 2023's Neo-Gothic #1.
Writing's Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. Art's Max Dunbar, colors're Sebastian Cheng, and letters're Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.
Publisher's DC.)
