Starscream (and several of the other 'cons) are such monsters in this comic, I love it. And Optimus Prime comes off as having the weight of worlds on his shoulders in a way he rarely has in the past.
IKR? I think a lot of the latter comes down to some subtle body language in the art; Prime is acting a lot more gingerly than previously, not always posing in a heroic fashion at every opportunity.
I am an ENORMOUS fan of the 2nd half of the 2005 IDW continuity - James Roberts did more to humanize Transformers than any writer in history - but this is shaping up to be just as good.
Optimus has that G1 Furman Marvel feel to him. Full of compassion, but also full of self doubt and I love that. IDW did it's own thing and I respect it for that, even if it didn't click with me at all, but this feels like the characters I grew up with with enough to keep it fresh and I'm fully invested.
Optimus as that impossibly cool and admirable hero, but letting you see that inside he's just as insecure as you, and therefore not as impossible as all that to try and emulate.
We get a similar bit with Astrotrain in another issue. I like the idea here of just because they’re the bad guy doesn’t mean they’re okay with indiscriminate slaughter.
