The Guardians split up. One group goes to find the human resistance, while the others go to meet Rancor in an attempt to negotiate a peaceful end to hostilities.
This whole plotline reads so differently in a post-Krakoa world. "Kill no man"? Nope. "Respect this sacred land?" Err... "Make more mutants"? Well, A for effort. Solid D on the practical.
And of course the notion that nearly every Mutant on Earth would apparently just decide to up and leave and become one big happy monolithic community while mankind stays behind to become Martian chow seemed so ridiculous before 2019. (mirthless laughter) Since these ones managed to last more than five years, they must've left Mystique behind or booted her out the airlock first chance they got.
Double checking, and yep, Mutants left before the Martians came.
And it does sort of imply the other heroes weren't much help. (also, since the origin of the Stark showed Iron Man was still very much alive and drinking when Mars attacked, it's not that they tried and the Sentinels just attacked them as well...)
