I get most of the why he's doing it (this was Marvel in the 80s. It really needed done. ... and really the same applies here'n'now), but still can't help eye-rolling juuuust a bit at how Carol's new powers are, like, way more powerful than Captain Marvel's.
It's one of Claremont's lesser things, saying [new character] is more powerful / dangerous / impressive than anyone else around. Gets the point across, sure, but all the same...
Clearly a man with absolutely no truck with the notion of competitive balance.

... still think the original red-blue outfit was Carol's best.

That moment of Carol just casually dropping that her dad beat her up is deeply alarming on many levels.
Sometimes, looking at that household, it's a wonder she turned out as psychologically healthy as she has.
