It turns out Spider-Man's test is to bring in the Hulk, but he leaves before the Avengers can explain why.

Yeah, this is not quite "Avengers #200" bad, but it's pretty darn close, and there's no possible mind-control to explain away this one!

Peter's a teenager, and we was all stupid at that age. Hawkeye's Hawkeye and Silver Age Wasp is... well. Don't know what everyone else's excuse is.
(Silver Age Wasp I could easily believe would exclude Spider-Man solely on the basis she cannot see his face, and therefore cannot determine whether he is hot or not under there.
The Wasp don't got time for the uggos.)

Hawkeye saying he was all for letting Spidey in and then getting defensive when Peter starts acting up. Classic classic Hawkeye move.
(The Avengers not letting Spidey in on the grounds of him being too short-tempered seemed a bit odd. Double-checked and this is after Quicksilver joined.
So presumably there is in fact a hot-tempered jerk quota, and Pietro was filling it quite adequately.)

Spider-Man was one of the first people (after Rick Jones) to learn the Hulk was really Bruce Banner. And he didn't tell anyone. Was Peter's idea of "great responsibility" not quite as fine-tuned back then?

IIRC, the page after the last one here said the Avengers *also* wanted to help the Hulk. They just didn't tell Spider-Man that.
