Fresh off telling his dad that it's on like Donkey Kong--because even in the seventies, you didn't just FIGHT your arch-nemesis, you had to feud for a while first--Shang-Chi goes to catch some shuteye in Central Park. Yeah, that's... that's not gonna work out for him.
After beating up some racist bikers...

So M'Nai (oh, Marvel) is basically in the same boat as Shang. He doesn't want to carry out his orders, but he's deeply loyal to Fu Manchu, and there's the added inducement of his literal and metaphorical scars (hey, you don't think there's something literary going on there, do you?).
Midnight tells Shang to meet him for a rumble.

They fight all over New York, and are interrupted by some nosy cops, before finally making their way to a construction yard. (If I were a freelance photographer, I'd just stick around a New York construction yard all day, because there's bound to be superhero fight there. I'd also let my elderly aunt die and stay married to the redhead, but that's me.)

Unfortunate implications aside (and I'd say that was more the innocence of the times than Englehart trying to be mean), I think Midnight is a pretty strong character for a one-off villain. He's a dark reflection of the hero back before that became old-hat, his design is sleek, he's interestingly nuanced in his motivation... I think he could've easily become a rogue's gallery mainstay or even the villain of a Shang-Chi movie, just off the strength of his conception. Too bad he gets knocked off so soon (I cheated a little and checked his Wiki--he gets resurrected, but as a Silver Surfer villain of all things).
