To be honest, I thought this title ended last issue, so this one came as a surprise.
And then I read it wondering where the story was. I was kind of amused at the series of splash panels featuring increasingly large fight scenes featuring ludicrous numbers of characters across the years. Nauck does a great job, but this almost feels like it would have been a good opportunity for an artist jam session. (This was also the first issue where I saw that House of Strickland AEW ad, and I swear, not knowing anything about the wrestler, I thought it was a preview for a really weird new DC title or hero...)
I feel like this could have been called Stargirl Anniversary Special, for how little it tied into the previous 11 issues of JSA... and that's basically what this was, as well as Geoff Johns' farewell to DC. (AFAIK) Very nice for what it is--I really do like Courtney and her cast, and it's still amazing that a reboot of Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy, of all characters, has had such lasting impact and staying power in the DCU.
Way back in the New 52 Justice League of America, Amanda Waller makes Stargirl give a speech about Johnny Appleseed, after which Stargirl yells at Waller for making her read out something so stupid, glurgey and incoherent. Sorry, no idea why I was thinking of that.
What a random series this was (even more so if we count the Golden Age one shot and Stargirl series as being part of it, and we might as well).
... we're not likely to see this series' version of Huntress again, huh? She's been shoved off to a 31st century. She'll be fine.
So many plot threads just left on the vine for other writers to ignore. (although, admittedly, Whiz Kid didn't make a tremendous impression. Not exactly going to be sorry if he never showed up again.) Are Beth and Yolanda okay after being possessed and, uh, ripped in half and stitched back together again?
(slightly surprised that for once Geoff Johns didn't include a hook for a sequel...)
I do like that Geoff Johns' last real hurrah for DC involved creating a shit ton of random Golden Age era characters and dropping them into the modern day for other writers to ignore and/or use for cannon fodder... I mean, I'd like to think that some of them will be used well.
And also we got back Beth and Yolanda. I have been mad for DECADES at how they got killed off in Eclipso. I'm okay with some handwaving to bring back as many members of Infinity Inc as possible and restore them to factory default, given how shoddy the team as a whole was treated over time. (Though Sylvester must stay dead for all time to ensure Courtney's dominance of the title.)
I, too, am wary of Jeff Lemire. He's not bad, but I just don't connect with his writing most of the time. But I do so love the JSA.
It would've been nice to see what Golden Age Aquaman was about.
It's not that I didn't like most of this series (the total lack of Black Adam was very much appreciated), but it was very random and a little directionless? Don't know if Johns and his problem with delays was a contributing factor to that or not. The parts where it wasn't random there's also the stock Johns villain who likes killing lots of people because they're evil.
A lot of intriguing concepts and ideas and characters, but so few of them got time to breath.

Well, next up it's... Jeff Lemire.
Oh. Hmm.
