Um...didn't Surfer just sate his hunger without destroying a planet? How would Galactus still be a harbinger of death if he doesn't devour worlds anymore?

Nope the first planet he was going to eat was evacuated of it's water dwelling inhabitants who were moved to Yondu's world to live in it's oceans. Then the Keeper at the urging of Eon (before Retcon that comes later) allowed him to eat the planet saving his life since the Keeper had pretty much starved Galactus to the brink of death.

Given how unfathomably big space is, I'm surprised Galactus always comes back to the one planet which gives him any trouble at all, instead of just heading really, really far away where Earthlings won't interfere. (Ignore that no matter what, Earthlings will interfere, somehow.)

Some cosmic gourmand he is, he never even leaves the neighborhood, much less the city. It's like ordering from a pizza place which actively hates you.

To be fair Galactus didn't actually attack Earth this time he pretended to head that way so the Keeper would go there allowing him to go eat some Inhabited Planets that are galactic speaking close to Earth(Yondu's homeworld was on the menu) so the surfer didn't notice the slight shift in his direction.
