This was the issue that made me fall in love with superhero comics.
I know, weird choice, right?
It turned up randomly in an Easter basket at my grandparents' house. There I was, 7 years old, reading a story about a guy with laser beam eyes fighting an unstoppable transforming robot. Interest IMMEDIATELY piqued.
More than that: The superhero was SAD. He was kinda messed up, talking to people who weren't there. He got arrested by the cops, who thought he was weird and scary. And in spite of all that, he did the brave thing. The right thing. He fought to protect people who were afraid of him and wanted to hurt him.
Plus no one told me comic book art wasn't supposed to look like Walt Simonson's, all weird and scratchy and kinetic.
So of course I got hooked. And the high point of my life as a comics fan, decades later, was getting to meet Walter and Louise Simonson and thank them for this issue.
Founded by girl geeks and members of the slash fandom, scans_daily strives to provide an atmosphere which is LGBTQ-friendly, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harassment free.
Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
