I was planning on posting Thanos Quest, but there is only so much character shilling I can take. Two prestige format books just to say how cool Thanos is? Nah, I’m out. There’s enough of that in the main series. Somebody else post them if they want.

Anyway, Thanos summons the Silver Surfer and Drax to demonstrate how awesome he is now he has the Infinity Gems.

Mephisto: Ohohoho, really now?

I’d much rather read volumes of Thanos being cool over the character shilling that’s gone on in recent years whether it be the Inhumans being forced everywhere or pages like everyone saying how great America Chavez is.

They say it's not bragging if it's the truth, and while that's a little bit oversimplified, the Thanos of this period was definitely genuinely clever instead of just watching and waiting for the writer to make everyone stupid enough for him to get all the things. Using his faked death to trap the Silver Surfer in a bureaucratic nightmare world? A-plus, no notes. Taking a moment to inform two of his greatest enemies just how thoroughly they've failed to stop him from gaining power? I'd say he's entitled to a victory lap. And it's pretty great that a character who had supposedly had his day in the 1970s came back bigger and better and more compelling than ever.

The thing is, Infinity Gauntlet was his peak, both in terms of villainous achievement and personal development. There was really nowhere for the character to go after the end of that miniseries besides the land of diminishing returns. And that's exactly where he went, except Starlin and Marvel wanted him to stay as awesome as ever, so...shill shill shill. At least The Death of Captain Marvel and Thanos' turn in the MCU allowed Starlin's characters to go out on top.

I honestly really enjoyed the Thanos solo series (the uh... Giffen one) whose premise was basically "Thanos tries to be a good guy and *is really bad at it*". It managed to keep him in-character, and having him try to sorta make amends for what he did while also still being a complete and utter supervillain at heart was surprisingly endearing, because you could have him go "Oh, that's genuinely clever but also incredibly stupid at the same time" thing.
