To be somewhat fair, one of the big reasons Batman didn’t kill the Joker over Jason’s death was because the Joker became ambassador to Iran.

Eh. At least it's more plausible for Jason to end up the Joker's successor than for Dick to do so at the end of The Dark Knight Strikes Again for... no real reason whatsoever. And not even as a result of the original Joker breaking him, but because Dick was bitter over Batman firing him years before. (I think. Please correct me if I misremembered.)

Based on ASBAR , Miller pulled a "We Need To Talk About Kevin" and made it so that Dick is just inexplicably violent and evil from day one. Barely cares about his parents getting murdered, almost beats Green Lantern to death. The plan seemed to be "Batman should never have worked with this stupid evil kid."
