I appreciate " Starbreaker Corps " as a name, but nothing's going to beat that bit from late 2000s JLA where Starbreaker went " You fools are scared of Sun Eaters? I'm literally what they grow up to be. "
(Alas, the only series to ever riff on that was Morrison/Sharp Green Lantern, and even that was just narrative captions.)
I ... appreciate them giving Guy something to do, but he's never, ever been the scholarly type. I mean, pre-Crisis Guy perhaps had a background in education and psychology, and taught physical education, but most alterations to his back story leave him as more of a blue collar jock/cop/thug/meathead. So seeing him hit the books feels out of character.
But in trying to decide which of the other Earth Lanterns might be more suited for this course of study, I couldn't decide. Especially since some of them were already occupied with other parts of the story. And none of the Earth Lanterns really strike me as all that scholarly. Hal is military/cop, John's an architect/Marine, Kyle's an artist, Simon was basically a street racer, Jessica was a survivalist/recluse, Jo's military/cop, Keli's a kid. So I guess it fell on Guy to do the thing with the book for the sake of story.
I was just gonna say. I can accept a lot of different Guy Gardners with varying degrees of aggression and mental health. I don't think I can get behind "Guy the reader," though. I would've picked Jo or Jessica before him.
Still, I know these comics trade on nostalgia and favorite characters, but there are theoretically 3600 Lanterns, right? If there's a story need that an existing name can't fill, maybe we can just...create a new one?
At the Corps' height, they had 7200. And I don't think more than a few hundred have been named, so yeah... lot of room to just make new ones as needed. Heck, Earth has 8 or 9 alone.
(And Jo or Jessica, even Simon, have so much untapped potential and room for growth compared to Guy, whose personality has been set in stone for decades. He's many things, but not exactly the studious one.)
Of course, it doesn't help that writers keep destroying the Corps and killing off or depowering most of them.
I'd think Salaak or Mogo would be the most obvious candidates to either uncover secrets regarding the Book of Oa or to have known them all along, respectively.
THough I suppose I could see John doing the research into the Guardians' history and secrets after Mosaic.
You know, I never think of Kyle and Conner as really knowing each other or being on civilian first name basis. But it kind of makes sense, since their superhero origins are both inextricably tied into the same major series of events, the death and return of Superman.
