There is a thing in the Ultimate Destruction game that said Gamma Mutation is influenced by the psyche of the transformed. (well, mostly. Women just get *ahem* enhanced physiques.) Don't know if that's from the comics, but all the same, if it it... raises questions. Betty's already in a pretty horrible place, but what's going on in there to turn her into a feathery chicken woman? (or a harpy, as it were.)
... forgot it was MODOK who turned her into this. Thought it was the Leader. Because, y'know... messing around with gamma radiation is more his thing.
(Also thought for some time it was Roy Thomas who wrote this storyline, not Englehart. Can't imagine why would've thought Roy Thomas would write a story where Betty is turned into a monster woman called "Harpy". *cough*ladyliberators*cough*)
In Al Ewing's IMMORTAL HULK, he posits that Betty's Harpy form owes to women's anger being seen as making them monstrous -- and Betty's complete comfort, at that point in her life, with being seen as a monster if she gets to express and act on that anger. Kinda making the subtext text in a really interesting reclamation sorta way.
