So Peter can't have an emotionally stable relationship because that's not "relatable", but suddenly having a long-lost cousin who is old enough to be his father is okay?

Wow, but Peter's first reaction to a stranger showing up is to panic because... May might learn he's Spider-Man. Somehow.
Doesn't make him look very good.

Feeling of missing Ultimate Spider-Man intensifying.

I think you're missing the context. In an earlier scan/issue, Spider-Man rescued this guy from Torment, who told him he was related to Spider-Man. Spider-Man quipped that it was a 'distant relation'.

Cut to now, that same guy shows up at May's place to reveal they're related, and with that information there's a very strong chance he realizes Peter is Spider-Man. Peter wasn't thinking about how they were related, but more the fact that this guy pieced it together and was about to reveal it.

To be fair...

if you just learned you might be Spider-Man's cousin/related to him
and you just discovered that your birth parents are Ben Parker and May Parker
and you meet May's nephew Peter
who's had a very long, public history of involvement with/around Spider-Man
it wouldn't be hard to go "I am Spider-Man's cousin and Peter Parker's cousin and wait a minute..."

So Peter had better get Johnny or Matt or someone to wear the Spider suit long enough for Mac to see the two of them together in classic Silver Age secret identity hijinks.

I still miss the days when May knew the secret and could thus understand why Peter is torn between so many commitments and responsibilities and not a hapless, careless, failure.

JMS making May know who he was was one of the best developments for the character so of course it was undone.

At this point it's just ridiculous that May doesn't know. She's not the frail old woman who might drop dead from the slightest shock she was in the '60s.

Just explain that you were replaced by your jackass clone, Peter. It's better than her worrying that you're on drugs, having a mental crisis, or don't care about her.
