[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

Marjane Satrapi, author of the acclaimed graphic novel Persepolis and a leading champion for women's rights in Iran, died on Thursday. She was 56.

I posted excerpts from the first volume here and here earlier this year.

Sad news indeed. Persepolis in particular opened a window, for many of us Western readers, to a side of Iranian society which our news media (to say nothing of our governments) had largely neglected.

I had heard the old adage that we have more in common with the regular people of other countries than we do with our own government, but reading Persepolis for the first time really drove it home for me. It was a supremely eloquent work.

This is a punch in the guts. Persepolis is a great coming of age story, a precious memoir of life in Iran and a warning of how fast theocrats can take the power under the guise of revolution.

Well, crap. Persepolis 1 and 2 are powerful, significant works, and that's way too young.
