On Flickr, somebody presumably living in or staying in Europe has put up images from that Italian X-Men graphic novel that Chris Claremont and Italian superstar artist Milo Manara did. Right here. Anyone want to translate what the back cover, which is in one the images, says?

The book stars Storm, Rogue, Rachel Summers, Sage, Kitty Pryde, and Psylocke, and it's about pirates in Madripoor.

Oh, hell...I've never heard the artist name before, but the style's so familiar. Is that the same person who did the Desire story in Sandman: Endless Nights?

Indeed. Also some brutal historical fiction with Hugo Pratt.

I'm fond of the Italian guys. And particularly Crepax and Serpieri(the latter ONLY for the art, I should mention). And I sometimes draw erotic comics, and try very hard to draw good butts. So a friend, she starts telling me I need to look at more Manara. And I do. Now don't get me wrong, he's amazingly talented and skillful. I particularly like things he draws written by Jodorowsky, like the recent BORGIA stuff(which is what said friend shoved under my nose).

I only really have one problem with him: he can only draw one woman. One very sexy, beautifully-drawn woman despite her lack of a nose. And sometimes she has freckles. But one woman nonetheless.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Manara is an old-school craftsman and draws like a motherfucker. Greg Land traces photos.

Plus, of course, Manara is proof that Land didn't even invent pornface.

He has a fair amount of that, sure. But I'd suggest it's both subtler and weirder with Manara. It's more like they always have faces like they're on a dance floor.

Manara has the excuse of drawing a lot of porn, though.

Translation of the back cover: "Here we are, with two great masters, both with illustrious careers, at the top of their game. Do you really need me to reveal what awaits you from the moment you turn the first page? I don't think so."

Also, I had no idea that Manara had done an X-Men story. Wow.

So... porn? Bondage-y, lesbian porn? With lots of phonetic accents?

Really? I don't think Manara and Serpieri's styles are all that similar, aside from both enjoying drawing sexy women.

This looks like a waste. I mean, it's Claremont + Manara + X-Women and all they do is a SFW comics? I'm desappointed at you, Marvel.

I’ve found a delicious review of the issue in Portuguese, that goes like that:

***SPOILERS***
Rogue inherits a property on the Greek island Kirinos, taking other four X-Women; Storm, Psylocke, Kitty Pride and Rachel Summers, for a week-long vacation in this paradise. However, during a night out, Rachel is kidnapped by a man she was hotly making out with (It doesn’t sound so lewd in the original). He then explodes the place where the women were staying. Saved by Psylocke, they go into a rescue mission for her missing team-mate, but face an enemy that takes their powers away.
Other highlights, according to the review: Psylocke dancing with her booty against a dude, and a married guy hitting on Storm.
***SPOILERS END***

It also says that it will be available in the USA in 2010 (it has been published in Italy in November this year by Panini).
The inside art is black and white, and the review complains both about Claremont’s weak plot and Manara’s style being unusual for the superhero medium (which would be expected).
Among some extras the edition comes with an interview with Manara, who admits that he never ever read anything X-Men before.

and for those who care:
ragazze = girls
in fuga = running away

As SFW as the project itself it, I find it highly amusing that all the women on the cover were drawn with their mouth sensually open in the classic "cock goes where?" expression.

Cause you know, we all fight our way through jungle like that.

(They look like blow-up dolls!)

Which is why even thinking about Manara gives me a sense of nausea. Regardless of how well he draws. Bleach. These women never have a spark of life about them, regardless of the rendering. They're just Real Dolls[tm].
