For a guy who was all "Hulk Smash!", old school Hulk could really over think life sometimes...

The Hulk/Bruce Banner,Group: The U-foes,Title:The incredible Hulk,publisher:Marvel comics

Hmm, let's see... Totally random circumstances,no control factors or measurable degrees of faction ???? Yeah it's totally doable. Risk your life why not ?

Typical among the intelligentsia, why the scientific method fails switch to personal attacks to find subjects for experimentation.

Why can't people just leave things alone ? Someone always has to go and touch stuff.

Little did they know that they also gained the power to instantly comprehend their transformations.

Have the U-Foes ever fought the Fantastic Four?

My question is, did they even survive? Sure doesn't look like it.

I think so, but the FF's powers are a bit simpler than, "Oh! I'm sinking, surely this means I can increase my mass at will!" or "I can't breath, my powers must be deflecting the air away from me!"

I think so, when most of the FF were incorporated into the Avengers, and some big battle was fought. But four on four, no.

Minds out of the gutter, kids.

Vector-dickery. seems like Reed's is also an offshoot of gamma rays....

Oh. Bruce Banner. Okay, so we have a case for it then...

I actually have this one issue of something (Fantastic Four's, but I'm really not sure which LINE) where a Galactus skull from another universe falls into 'normal' FF-verse, and when the FF investigate, the Banner from THAT universe comes along (as Hulk but in control) and calls them U-Foes. Afterwards he brings the "World Law Enforcement Squad" with him to deal with the 'U-Foes'.

So in one universe apparently, the U-Foes survived and got exactly what they wanted, and Banner formed his own 'Avengers/Defenders' pastiche to deal with them amongst other things.

When I read that story I didn't know the U-Foes referred to some old characters. Nice touch.

Ironclad has been feeling his mass increasing whenther he likes it or not from the start of the transformation, and Vector knows his power works by repelling matter away from him, so it's not a stretch when you start gasping for breath that that's the reason.

Sound is kinetic energy, emitting kinetic energy is Vectors power, I've seen weaker excuses used.

Well I don't care how smart you are, if you suddenly look like a yellow and orange kindergarten construction paper project then you're not going to know what the hell is going on.

Yes, my calculations clearly show I will be yellow with swirls and zig-zags! This is to be expected.

Well, Reed Richards went from "I'm sure we'll be perfectly safeKKRZAAPPPPXAZAARGH!!!!" to "I have complete control over the elasticity of my body with no harmful side effects." in the space of 10 minutes, so I'll assume the genius level guy who did this on purpose, and who was zapped with the computer system of the spaceshuttle might be fairly quick on the uptake.

Well noticing your arm is stretching a great deal further is immediately noticeable. Just like catching on fire without being hurt or turning invisible.

Deflecting molecules not so much.

"Typical among the intelligentsia, why the scientific method fails switch to personal attacks to find subjects for experimentation."

The amount of scientific experiments in the Marvel Universe that have failed or never got off the ground in the first place simply because their test subjects were more secure in their masculinity or were okay with being thought chicken if it also meant that they were alive and unmutated is nothing short of remarkable.

Except IIRC Reed didn't even NOTICE he was using superpowers at first until it was pointed out to him.

And they spent the issue reailsing what their powers were, there's 10 pages of fighting the Hulk between the first face off and their self destruction. Vector knew full well what his power was by the time he "died", as did Vapor, ironclad and X-Ray.

Actually, I kind of like this. Just because you get powers, why would you be able to immediately control them, and why would your body not be damaged in some way by that in the meantime? I think this was meant as a critique of that very thing.

Of course, truth is that they'd all be very dead. But still.

Reed was actually more irresponsible. His plan was to get to the Moon, not get powers. And he didn't bother with a WHOLE bunch of basic details. Unless this a Niles Caulder moment and he just went, "Ahh, what the fuck, let's see what happens." And what was Reed going to do once he got to the Moon? Without a lander? Or a way back?

Actually--come to think of it, it's NASA's fault for building a ship with crappy shielding in the first place, something I've never seen anything mention. Actual astronauts could have been killed, and they sure as fuck knew better then.

I wonder sometimes if all this irresponsible science has produced any activist groups of any note in the MU.(I mean one that's more than "BOO SUPERHEROES! REGISTRATION!") I mean, if scientists experimenting on animals causes that kind of fuss. Sometimes BUMS have been experimented on. Or prisoners, like Luke Cage.

We experiment on bums and prisoners in this universe. Since none of them does anything more remarkable than get cancer it's no big deal. I do recall occasionally hearing someone dressed down because 'experimenting on criminal types just leads to lots of superpowered criminals.'
