This made me so happy, let me count the ways - "Spiders from Mars"
That mask - I like Disco!Wings mask!
On the one hand it's fun that Dick is all 'Kory is awesome and a cat', another thing he has in common with Bruce!Dad, but on the other hand, would they have this conversation?
Anyway, it made me happy. Add it to the list for comic shopping tomorrow!
I'm not a big fan of Smith as a comics writer, but he seems to be getting the hang of the Bruce/Dick vibe and banter, and I'm loving Nightwing in these pages. the smile when he mentions wanting to poach Katana for the Titans is adorable!
I didn't like Cacophony as much as I wanted to, but I did like his work with Green Arrow and from what I've seen of WG, I like. As for the banter, Smith as a whole has always been good at writing banter (although vulgar) which is probably why he's getting the hang of bruce/dick so well.
I've never liked the Ollie Green Arrow so, love Clerks though I do, Quiver was always going to be a hard sell which he failed to make to me. And I might someday forgive Smith for what he did to "Stanley and his Monster" for the sake of that story, but it won't be anytime soon, and most probably not in this lifetime.
And his banter can be GREAT, cf Randall and Dante, who are plausible as friends in Clerks, but can also fall flat, cf Chasing Amy, where the two main characters there fail to come across even as people who can stand to be in the same room as each other, never mind friends and working partners.
I don't know, I like the interaction between Banky and Brodie (chasing amy). But then again, it could be just me and granted it's been a couple of years since I've seen it last. But the point is that they are friends who'd known each other so long. I don't think they COULD stand to be around each other -- which is why the eventually parted ways. (in addition to other things, of course.)
In what way out of character? Batman trying to be grim with Nightwing and knowing it never works because the kid knows him too well, and Nightwing being his classic more light-hearted hero (Which early Nightwing best exemplified as he sort of "broke free" of the responsibility of being Batman's junior partner) who can yank Batmans chain better than any other hero.
I guess I just found Smith's Batman and Bruce characterizations to ring false. I think it was Cacophony (which I read and was disgusted with) and from this, the scene with Tim and Arthur (in Widening Gyre) that seemed OOC -- to me, anyways.
Which is strange, because I actually enjoyed Smith's Batman in Quiver. And I loved Quiver and Sounds of Violence. And I absolutely adore Smith for creating Mia.
I think I actually picked up Widening Gyre #1 and ended up getting rid of it, I just didn't even want it around it was so bad. I think what really bugs me is his Joker and Ivy characterizations. Both are so terrible I can't stand it. I like my Ivy more subtle and Joker... less sophomoric.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's out of character for those two to banter or to go lighthearted on occasion. However, there's something off about Dick's language. Subtle differences in his speech patterns.
He writes arrows better because they speak more casually than Bats, imo.
I think someone who grew up as the original Robin, probably having his hair ruffled by EVERY hero he met (Superman with his "Hey there youngster" and Silver Age Wonder Woman "Isn't he just the CUTEST?" would probably have given him an incipient bald spot) really might react like that when it happens to him as Nightwing.
He knows that Metamorpho is only kidding, so a Bat-like "STOP THAT!" would be over the top, but he wants to say something about it, and a smiling "Quit it" keeps the mood light.
This exchange is kind of making me want to buy it.
I don't think it's OOC. This is basically the way Dick was with Bruce, isn't it? He can tease him and Bruce is obviously okay with being teased. Did I tell you they evolved from CATS?! Bruce probably loves it when Dick is like this.
I like to think that all Robins picked up something from Bruce's fetish closet.
Dick: Cats Jason: Wonderwomen (I shipped Jason/Donna once) Tim: Highly free spirited rule breaking rebel aka Stephanie Brown. (Steph could be compared to Selina in some regards).
I don't think Batman has a fetish for cats, lol. Maybe it's a fetish for big breasted (and very seductive) women in catsuits. lol. But then again, in the TAS Bruce didn't give up when Selina got turned into the actual cat, so maybe he does have a fetish,
Smith's first Batman stories suffered from a lack of Robins, I thought. I wasn't impressed with his use of Tim Drake earlier in this series, but he appears to get Dick Grayson just fine—perhaps because Smith's the right age to understand the power of the collar, the friendly Outsiders/Titans rivalry, and the delight of how Bruce felt attracted to a burglar who dressed as a cat but Dick’s bedding an actual cat person.

Date: 2010-01-14 08:25 am (UTC)That... doesn't sound like what Nightwing would say for some reason. o_o
Also, this was drawn by the same guy who did the Joker miniseries, right? He's... improving. Slightly.
