Two-Step was a limited series by Warren Ellis and Amanda Conner. It takes place in the London of an alternate present that's much more technologically advanced than ours.









She follows them in a long chase scene, at the end of which the pursuer manages to shoot the pursued's kneecaps.











They go their separate ways. A week later, they happen to bump into each other again.













The Quarry guys decide to call on their specialist...







Eventually, the gangsters manage to catch them...













And it's off into the sunset...

I'd dismissed this at the time as Ellis using up random sexyweird bits that didn't fit into Transmetropolitan, and now that I've read these selections, it really comes off as Garth Ennis trying to write Transmetropolitan (mostly because of rape dude). But the art sure is pretty.

This is one of the greatest disconnects I've ever seen between awesome and attractive art that really strives to be so much on so many different levels, joined with utterly tiresome and insufferable writing that threatens to break its arm from patting itself on the back too much.

This entire comic would be immeasurably improved with all the dialogue stripped out completely - or, if there MUST be dialogue, for it to be replaced with the words "INSERT ELLIS RANT HERE" in every speech balloon.

But this is definitely Ellis pandering.

I consider myself a pretty big fan of Ellis, but whenever he writes something that has a very thick humorous streak, like this or NextWave or even Transmetropolitan, I just can't get into it, mainly because he's not all that funny.

No, that's too harsh. He does produce some genuinely hilarious bits, but he also produces lots of lines that just fall completely flat. And I don't believe he actually feels this way, but a lot of his jokes come off like they were written by the ten-year-old who thinks simply adding references to bodily functions or naughty bits automatically makes something funny.

This thing? It'll be horribly dated in less than 3 years, like just about all of his technophilic work. I get that feeling now even reading TRANSMET.

This dates from the period when he was in the process of closing down his old Delphi forum right after telling off the fanboys for wanting to read the same old shit, and he was going to put his money where his mouth was and had all these mad ideas, and was working with all these great artists... and the miniseries were all about this good. I don't mind revisiting them, mostly on account of a greater appreciation for artists like Conner and Cully Hamner ( who did Red), but honestly, none of these are as good as Nextwave.

In the sense that they both have slightly augmented young female protagonists who broadcast their lives over webcam, or the equivalent? Otherwise ... uh, not really. And I have to say that while this was amusing, I think Extras is a lot better.

Oddly, I find myself disappointed by the eventual smooching. I liked it better as a buddy story.

Hmm, maybe in the Elder-ish panel-cramming(and I think it's more that they probably share that influence, or at least a MAD influence), and also in the inking style, I can see that. I'm a big fan of Dorkin, but never really saw a link before...
