I'm not sure, honestly, but I have a partial translation of the volume which uses the phrase "Anne, you speak of a time of revolution...during which we were both killed." That, and the suggestion that she once served "those who were condemned" is all I have.

I assume she was on the wrong side of the French Civil War, but managed to fake her death and went underground and is now in service of Louis instead.
