With Virginia Dare dead, and her murderer Norman Osborne greviously wounded by the pirate Wilson Fiske, Peter Parquagh has nothing tying him to the New World anymore.
So he takes a task from a Captain Stacy, to make his way in England- transport a mysterious cargo to Henri le Pym, in Carcassone.
(note: spoilers for spider-man 1602 #5 undercut; be wary!)

And he leaves, unaware that Pym's master is the mysterious Baron Octavius, who needs the blood of one unnaturally powered to reverse his own self-experimentation.. and that the wounded Osborne, who had been hiding in the cart, is all too willing to strike a deal with Doctor Pym...
Meanwhile, Peter decides to take in a show with some of the money he's got, and meets another 1602 version of a 616 person:

Saving the girl's brother from a tumble, he becomes acquainted with the Watsonnes, who turn out to be old acquaintances of his family.
He even takes to the stage:

and to Marion Jane:

... unaware that the pirate Fiske has sent his deadly killer Bull's-Eye against Peter, to take vengeance for his defeat.
Baron Octavius sends his Lizard after Peter as well... and, amusingly, the two agressors end up canceling each other out:

" I missed! I never miss! "
Anyhow, Bull's-Eye melts back into the crowd as Peter is taken back to Octavius's labs, where Pym bleeds him out because Witchbreed blood is really neat apparently.
Then the city guardsmen arrive, to take everyone in following the previous fracas:

(and yes, that is 1602!Beast. Long story.)
In the following confusion, everyone escapes; Pym to Venice with Octavius, and Peter through a window.
Peter soon follows, however:

As Baron Octavius grows impatient:

(Yes, that's how Octavius secured Pym's services.)
But, in due time, the Spider arrives and makes his way to Octavius's place:

He also has the Watsonnes; most of them are in his dungeons, with Marion and her brother left to perform, because that's just how Octavius rolls.
Peter, again, secretly takes the stage:

And the Lizard, once again, has at him.
So Peter takes to the walls instead:

And contends with another of Octavius's monsters:

Yup, it's Norman Osborne!
Who's soon dispatched:

As is Peter.
Pym, however, doesn't bleed him out again; he explains that he's figured out a method much more efficient. He explains his motives to Peter, then gives him a restorative, promising to help him after Octavius is cured as he leaves.
Restored indeed, Peter escapes and frees the Watsonnes.
Meanwhile, Pym delivers the restorative... and Octavius smashes it, because:

... somehow, I think the design could've gone better.
In the final chapter, Octavius and his monsters rage against the Spider as the Bull's-Eye closes in!
But Octavius first takes his charges to task, displaying his powers:

(okay, NOW it works.)
Peter then shows, however, that blunt fist trauma isn't covered so much by his powers.
Then Norman lays into him, until:

But Peter is un(?)wittingly saved by the mad Lizard, who seizes Bull's-Eye by the neck and leaps into the depths of Venice's canals.
Octavius stands triumphant, Marion Jane in his tentacles; but then something else comes out of the canals.... Henri le Pym, who was hurled into the canals, who saved himself with his own work:

" What I give.. " le Pym says " I can also take away! "
And he crushes Octavius under his foot.
Giant Pym and his tiny wife then leave, to work on a cure for themselves:

The webs spin into the future, it turns out: the time-diluted blood of Peter Parker (preserved as one of Pym's samples in Octavius's dungeon) will later be used to create the super-soldier serum that will empower this timeline's Steve Rogers, who will of course go back and do the Rojhaz thing.
Everything else is the same- thanks to Osborne's smallpoxing at the start, tribal relations sour and colonialism happens. Also, the dinosaurs get hunted to extinction.
And with that, the "final story of 1602" comes to a close.

Date: 2010-02-19 05:32 pm (UTC)Imagine how much more interesting the plot could have been if, say, Parquagh fell in love with the Elizabethan-equivalent of Mary Jane while she was an actress, only to discover that she was really a guy? (It did happen, in those days.) Or have Edward Brocke as a devout Catholic blackmailed into becoming a poisoner by the English court to avoid being persecuted for his faith!
Additionally, here's a thing: it's unfair to compare an unexceptional artist such as this with Andy Kubert, but at least the original 1602 looked dirty enough to be 17th-century England. Most of these characters look as if they bathe daily, and the backgrounds seem lifted off a video game.

Date: 2010-02-19 08:12 pm (UTC)They at least still remember that dinosaurs lasted into the 17th century, and that there was, briefly, an independent nation in the new world before the American revolution.
(I also wouldn't be sure that Rohjaz is this Cap and not the main timeline's version, still. Marvel multiverse time travel doesn't seem to require that to happen.)
