Warrior #10, Part One: Alan Moore

scans_dailyWhile I've tried to cover some of the breadth of the UK comics industry circa 1983 in my previous posts, many US fans think of a handful of creators when they say "British comics." And I know a few of you have been anxiously awaiting a post that would include one of them. Handily, the first three stories in "Warrior" #10 were all written by Alan Moore.
A special treat, the back cover is a "clean" version of the Garry Leach cover.
Mostly I just wanted to post that Marvelman logo. Mr. Cream has a running conversation with his dead great-grandfather about the contrast between his European demeanor and his African heritage.
Back at the flat, Mrs. Moran tries to work and worries about her pregnancy.
Mr. Cream sees the unconscious Big Ben land and shudders. He then catches up to Marvelman and offers to blast open the bunker doors. Marvelman looks at him with amusement and then just tears the bunker apart with his gloved hands. Inside, there's a massive laboratory with a weird-looking skeleton, retro-futuristic tech, and a picture of Marvelman as he appeared in the 1950s.
And next, we check in with chapter ten of "V For Vendetta", "Venom." The agents of the Nose finally realize that V's been systematically killing off everyone who worked at the Larkhill concentration camp. But there's one person left, if they can get to her in time...
Delia saw one of V's roses today, and he says he has another.
Those of you who've already read this will note I've completely omitted Mr. Almond and his sordid fate. Fortunately, V For Vendetta is readily available in finer bookstores.
And now a series that I don't think has ever been reprinted in America. "Warpsmith" is outright science fiction, about a group of beings who can instantly go anywhere, tasked with protecting the Gulfworlds from the Qys, a malevolent race that steals bodies as disguises. this chapter is "Cold War, Cold Warrior."
Tenga Dril, who had previously had his teleporting dermacircuitry damaged, arrives to find that Aza Chorn and his cluster-wives had been attacked by what they thought were Qys saboteurs wearing the bodies of children--but were actually children. They are summoned before the Black Warpsmiths.
What follows is a double-page spread of Tenga and Aza staring at each other while eldritch energies play over their bodies. They continue their mental duel until Tenga finally breaks and reveals his true form, which is promptly killed messily.
After the lesser Warpsmiths depart, the Black Warpsmiths discuss the matter, and we learn that the center Warpsmith had manipulated the Qys behind the scenes to expose the spy and test Aza Chorn's ability to battle what appeared to be a friend. The right Warpsmith decides to stay silent for a century in tribute to the elegance of the snare. Left and Center do, however, feel some pity for the children and Uxu Chil, also caught in the trap.
The Warpsmiths later showed up in Miracleman, as the technology used to create him was of concern to them.
