This is from X-Force #25, by Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost, and Clayton Crain.

For those who don't know, Wolverine's referencing how he gutted Rachel Summers to stop her from killing Selene. Yeah.

I remember that moment, James. I remember when Rachel was going to kill her and you were all "X-men don't kill" and she was all "she's a mass murdering vampire, I think it's okay," and then you stabbed her. And she would've died if it wasn't for Spiral. You giant hypocrite.

I couldn't help think that Kevin's spiel about killing everyone was Kyle and Yost meta-ing.

I think Logan lost the moral high ground on the "X-Men don't kill" when he agreed to join Cyke's stabby-squad.

Decent finale, though this series is never as good when Crain draws as it as it is when Choi & Oback do.

The decks-clearing exercise at the end was a bit unexpected; that's about half the cast out (though all their reasons make sense, and I was particularly happy to see Logan saying that Laura's out from now on).

He left that ground quite a while before that (most of the X-Men have killed by this point, anyway).

EXACTLY! He tried to stop Rachel from murdering by murdering her. Because X-men don't kill.

I would be, too, if she wasn't active and killing with Logan's approval in X-men: Second Coming #1, which also came out today, but takes place after this event. *sigh*

Being active as a hero isn't really the same as being on X-Force, I don't think. And she never really stopped killing bad guys, so far as I can recall, though Hellion was trying to rein her in on that.

To be fair, he tried to stop Rachel murdering Selene not because it was Selene, but because of the risks it posed to Rachel. She was already in a slightly fragile state about killing due to her own past as a Hound, and because if someone with the Phoenix Force inside them starts thinking killing is a good idea, then Dark Phoenix is probably only a heartbeat away.

Yeah, his powers were interesting in their sheer lethality (Like Rogue, but much, much more dangerous), though one can see how easy it is for writers to only see that as an excuse to use him in the angry loner bit. Making him someone who, perhaps slowly, comes to realise their potential and do something positive with them would have been much more challenging and interesting than this

She might come to regret that when the time comes for her "stabbity scene with Wolverine" #354.

You would think that everyone in the X-verse would give their eye-teeth for a stunt double.

Yeah, because X-Factor is so much more upbeat than this.

I doubt she would have killed and eaten her father, then get knocked up by an old boyfriend and then punted into limbo to await the death of her child that we all know is coming.

In X-Factor, at least the neglect didn't damage her character.

Date: 2010-04-01 12:23 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] theanswer
No, she would have just impregnated a teammate with a duplicate of herself, held the child during a touching moment when they realize they're beginning a family, and then watched in horror as she uncontrollably absorbs the child back into herself.

No biggy.

I've really enjoyed X-Force and liked this arc. It's also nice to finally wrap up Wither's character. Plus, this most recent kill will surely affect Elixir in some dire way.

You know, Laurie is getting more attention in the books in death than she did in life.

Motto. There used to be a time...now long past, I guess, when the X-men had the Moral High Ground. You know, when Magneto was a mass-murdering terrorist who had lost his own objectivity and couldn't see the Irony of his own actions.

Wolverine was the original anti-hero who kills. He just used to do it off-panel in the 1970s. He wasn't protecting Selene, he was protecting Rachel. Plus, you know...Selene has been killed before, iirc. She's one of those mystical Claremont villains who never really stays dead.

Maybe a little more detail might be useful -- how does a computer virus resurrect people/create zombies, and how does this all tie in with Selene's desire for godhood (plus how, as an Eternal, is she killed)?

On the "moral high ground" issue, I don't know that anything they've been doing lately losing them that - Magneto (at his worst) was all about oppressing humans, which the X-Men opposed. X-Force, despite the bad buzz it gets, has killed....mass-murderers, all of whom were in the process of planning and executing new genocidal actions against mutants; there wasn't the slightest bit of ambiguity about any of them.

Well, you did ask for a summary =)

Wither and Eli Bard were using the tech organic virus (Phlanx) to ressurect people to help make Selene into some sort of goddess. The arc seemed to go on a bit long for me, so I've only half been following, plus I've never been a big X-fan, besides Cable stuff.

From my reading of the Eternals, they can certainly be killed. They just get new bodies in their secret arctic cave, which I'm not sure is currently operational.
