Impulse #20, titled "First Base".

Our story starts with Bart playing a video game with his best friend (and future confidante) Carol Bucklen. When she has to leave for piano practice, she mentions that Bart should join "a club or a team or something."

He decides this is a great idea.



After that, he tries football and track (both being resounding failures) and turns up his nose at Max's suggestion of golf, before finally landing at baseball.



I love how easily he agrees to not pay attention.

It continues for a few more pages like this, with Bart doing just about everything wrong; Max even has to call him to the stands for a little reminder not to use his powers. (I'm paraphrasing here.)

Bart: The other kids are all doing their best!
Max: And if the other kids all jumped off a bridge, would you--
Bart: I can't believe you had to ask.



Ahem. Preston, I don't think that's exactly what they say about big feet.



He does. At high-speed. Needless to say, that ball is gone.

A few more pages of failure, including Bart taking the phrase "keep your eye on the ball" a little too far, and ending up with a painful-looking shiner. Eventually though, he hits the ball, bringing their team to victory.

Apparently Carol gets a little caught up in the excitement.

WHY IS THIS COUPLE IS IGNORED!?!?!?!? Sersiouly. They remember Max from this (they can't from his time in the Flash issues) but Carol is left on the bottom of the editing room floor? Tana, I can BARELY understand, but Carol. There is no excuse. Sure Bart move, but is an F-ING Speedester! traveling to two different cities in the same country (let alone the same timezone) is just a 10 minute jog to Bart!

With DC's slaughter fest, do you really want her remembered? Isn't there enough blood in the fridge already?

Shes to young to be fridge.... can she? I mean, they killed off Lian because it upset the whole Arrow family. But Carol is just to Bart. And they can't really mess up his character, not to mentition that Carol has little to now interaction with the superhero family, save Bart his antic and a time traveling trip with Bart's mom.

You would rather risk her return to lead to her death, or have be ignored and nonexistent in Bart's life, like she never existed in the first place?

Yeah, this. While I think it's a shame good, awesome character dynamics are being ignored... these days, DC doesn't see supporting casts. It sees chalk outlines and body-counts.

I'm happy if people are just forgotten about, quite frankly.

Y'know i really can't think of any other heroes besides Kon and Bart who've had pretty much their entire supporting casts ignored. I always thought since we're not getting a Kid Flash book this year, an "Impulsive Adventures of Kid Flash" miniseries (featuring at least one issue of Bart reuniting with his friends back in Alabama) would suffice.

It's a good thing they never had Impulse fight a Yeti in this book. You'd never see the characters. Just feet..Ugh.

I'm not a HUGE fan of the art, but it doesn't really bother me enough to distract from the story (well, for the most part.)

Heh! If Jaime gets to hang out with the Superbuddies, I think Bart should too. I mean, come on - a bwa and a ha by the dozen? He's a natural!

He played perfectly that time he had to pitch for YJ in that issue when they were playing baseball to save a planet with Doiby Dickles (who disappeared/went to limbo also btw), I don't understand why he's really bad here. I guess that issue of YJ came after this

The clumsy part of his character is cute and endearing. It's Bart. He's a goof. I'm sure he also doesn't care nor know why he should care what other people are saying about him. I'm assuming that's a reason why people like his character.
