LGBTQ Roll Call

With June being LGBTQ Pride, I couldn't think of a better time to do a Roll Call celebrating exceptional LGBTQ characters in comics.


While there have been a number of LGBTQ characters, most of them at best have been relegated to minor characters and at worst deplorable homophobic queer minstrel shows.
And don't get it conflated.

Visibility is not progress.

If it were then the Rawhide Kid and Northstar would be progressive trailblazing characters.

 So no, this isn't just my list of queer comic characters.

This is a salute to the elite characters who have provided me with a more than a few OH HELL YEAH! moments.
A list of characters and made me proud to be a comic book geek and an LGBTQ.

Yuriko practically told Storm how she was falling in love with her in an issue of X-Men back in the nineties, but I don't have it any more.

About Misty and Colleen, while it's never been shown plainly, it was made fairly obvious, in an early Xena/Gabrielle way. In the las few issues of Power Man/Iron Fist, Luke Cage quite plainly shook Colleen into admitting that she wasn't just mad at Misty cheating on the Fist, but she was jealous herself and it was "eating her up inside." And, c'mon, they were Claremont-written for a long while!

Which reminds me there was also Spectral, of the Strangers, an outright gay Ultraverse superhero (the poor guy was clumsily handled but hey, I have a soft spot for the Strangers). Then there was Mantra whom I'm not going to try to figure out whether s/he fits or not into this matter...

Collen's Word of God bi, according to Claremont (well, according to Byrne talking about Claremont, IIRC), but like Harley and Ivy, I'm still not holding out for anything that utterly demolishes the plausible deniability that the actual canon has always maintained.

Well, to me, that over-reaction of Colleen's jealousy was quite blatant, having her seethe in anger for an entire issue and almost kill some baddies because of it, even if it hasn't been made explicit otherwise.

Eh. Luke ends the conversation with "of course you're angry - she's pulling away from your friendship too", allowing the whole thing to be read quite straightforwardly as typical best-friend/boyfriend jealousy. There's nothing really threatening to a heteronormative take on her there, Luke's direct reference to them as best friends is an easy out.

Vampire!Misty refusing to bite Colleen is about as close as we ever get, I think. I really need to post that story...

There's also some subtle references early on in Fraction's Iron Fist run, went something like:

MISTY: I swear sometimes I love that white girl so much I could holler.
LUKE: Y'all should get gay-married.
MISTY: Can't--we'd lose our insurance.
LUKE: Love hurts.
MISTY: Don't it just.

Yuriko is Lady Deathstrike, Yukio is Logan's buddy who had a thing with Storm.

IIRC it's Yukio, not Yuriko, who is in love with Storm.

Claremont had Yukio and Storm as a very subtle couple in the mid-eighties, culminating in an issue where Storm's heart's desire was to go live in Japan with Yukio forever. It's often held up among X-fans as proof that Storm's bisexual.
