LGBTQ Roll Call

With June being LGBTQ Pride, I couldn't think of a better time to do a Roll Call celebrating exceptional LGBTQ characters in comics.


While there have been a number of LGBTQ characters, most of them at best have been relegated to minor characters and at worst deplorable homophobic queer minstrel shows.
And don't get it conflated.

Visibility is not progress.

If it were then the Rawhide Kid and Northstar would be progressive trailblazing characters.

 So no, this isn't just my list of queer comic characters.

This is a salute to the elite characters who have provided me with a more than a few OH HELL YEAH! moments.
A list of characters and made me proud to be a comic book geek and an LGBTQ.

Sarah Rainmaker from Gen 13 is missing in addition to others mentioned (Northstar!)

Given some of his rationale for leaving certain characters off of the list, I can understand omitting Sarah. Her sexuality shifts dramatically from writing team to writing team, and Adam Warren was the only guy who ever made her fairly well-balanced.

Actually I was going to include her but while doing research on her, I read about some of the issues that arose with her shifting sexuality. While I've read some issues of Gen 13, I hadn't read enough of the series to make a determination one way or the other which is why I held off on adding her. But I'd figure I would let other members co-sign or correct as to whether or not she should be included.

If there are story arcs where she's handled beautifully in regards to her orientation, I would love to check em out.

Adam Warren treated Sarah like she was a lesbian with a fondness for blonde girls, although her vegetarianism and environmentalism tended to get more panel time.

Adam Warren's run was very good. I also liked Gail Simone's Vol 3 run, the first 12 issues. Sarah was handled quite well, IMHO.

She has, of course, been used as a lusting-after-straight-girls foil for a pissed off Caitlin since Gail left.
