With June being LGBTQ Pride, I couldn't think of a better time to do a Roll Call celebrating exceptional LGBTQ characters in comics.
While there have been a number of LGBTQ characters, most of them at best have been relegated to minor characters and at worst deplorable homophobic queer minstrel shows.
And don't get it conflated.
Visibility is not progress.
If it were then the Rawhide Kid and Northstar would be progressive trailblazing characters.
So no, this isn't just my list of queer comic characters.
This is a salute to the elite characters who have provided me with a more than a few OH HELL YEAH! moments.
A list of characters and made me proud to be a comic book geek and an LGBTQ.
Also, if you haven't already, feel free to check out my recent post on No_Scans discussing Queer Tropes to better understand where I'm coming from on this.
That being said: ROLL CALL!!!!!!!

Go ahead. It's okay to look.
THAT"S CLOSE ENOUGH.
I'm gonna need you to back away from my man, right the hell now.
Satsu
(Ultimate) Colossus
Not sure if the live-action movie version featured 616 Colossus or Ultimate Colossus.
It really doesn't matter because you're a fool if you think I"m about to pass up a chance to partake in some Grade-A beefcake like one Daniel Cudmore.
Willow Rosenberg
Tara MaClay
John Constantine
Xena
The Midnighter
Apollo & The Midnighter
Now, I'm willing to bet there are some gems out there that myself and others may not be aware of and/or should (re)consider checking out.
So if you have any recommendations of awesome exceptional prominent LGBTQ characters in comics then by all means, sharing is caring. Please post them away in the comments.

Date: 2010-06-08 12:57 pm (UTC)It doesn't help that Way and Liu (writers of Dark Wolverine) have openly stated that they write Daken not as a bisexual but as a 'power-sexual'... somebody who'll screw anybody if he can get something out of it. Because hey, he wouldn't be cool if he was really bisexual, right? Manipulative faux-bisexuals are way more badass. Sigh. :/
Not saying that queer villains can't be good examples of queer representation (ironic, huh?). I even agree that the character's premise is cool... kind of like a male Poison Ivy. But for the purposes of queer representation? Yeah... let's stick with "fan mileage varies" :)

Date: 2010-06-08 01:12 pm (UTC)Like I said, I think Bendis handles him far better than what you've described about Way and Liu.
And for me, I do perceive Daken as a male Poison Ivy which is why he's given me more than a few HELL YEAH moments in New and Dark Avengers. Especially considering that queer males are always written as weak and powerless. So to see one of us fucking up cis-gendered heterosexual prominent male characters (and sending the proverbial middle finger to the establishment), as a queer male comic book fan it was refreshing for me and that's why I included him.

Date: 2010-06-08 02:09 pm (UTC)And to be fair, Dark Wolverine is in most cases decently written, and they never explicitly state the "power-sexual" thing in the text itself. But it's heavily implied in the story, and the authors telling fans that that's how they're approaching Daken (as if OMG sociopathic bisexual-only-to-mess-with-you character is something new and brilliantly clever) sours the whole endeavor for me.
But Daken aside, more sexually-empowered queer characters (who are y'know, actually queer and not just a gay panic bogeyman) would be EPIC.
